Traveling into the Muskwa-Kechika was an unforgettable experience. I have never been anywhere as remote from human development. Ironically, some of the strongest impressions on me were made by the other participants at the camp. It was great getting to know such a diverse group of artists and writers, and it was an incredible opportunity to learn from others about the complexities of addressing wilderness through art. When we entered the camp, Israel had just commenced its bombing of Lebannon. Everyone seemed to be struggling with anxiety and internal conflict about globalisation, environmental degradation and war. Immersed in the forces of weather, trees and mountains, each of us struggled to find our own approach to the project. For weeks after I returned home my dreams were full of mysterious mists, clarifying reflections, rocks and vistas, loon calls, and infinite shades of green. Grizzly Ghost is a 13-minute dvd that uses Werner Herzog’s film Grizzly Man about Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard as its starting point. Video for the project was shot in Toronto and in the Muskwa-Kechika during the Artist Exploration Camp, 2006. |
