For her oustanding work i n p u b l i c i t y for the
Alberta Women's Institutes over a period of eight years,
Mrs. T. H. Howes was presented with a L i f e Membership i n
the organization at the P r o v i n c i a l Convention In May 1955.
It was through Mrs. Howes' e f f o r t s that the feature
" The Spinning Wheel" appearing i n the Edmonton Journal did
much to stimulate interest i n the A. W. I, i n the northern
part of the province and i t was enjoyed by everyone who
read ' The Woman's Page'. She also contributed many fine
a r t i c l e s to several farm weeklies and was Assistant Editor
of the Federated Hews, a position which she s t i l l holds i n
1955 - 1957.
Born at Alba, Pennsylvania, Ruth Beatrice Bloom was
educated at Elmira Free Academy i n Hew York State, and Inter
graduated from Bethan College, West V i r g i n i a . She was a
member of the Zeta Tan Alpha Sorority. She taught History
and English i n the High School at Jewett, Ohio f o r two years.
In 1917 she married Thomas H. Howes, manager of the
Freestone Farms at Akron, Ohio, and i n 1925 the Howes family
moved to ' Willow Farm' near M i l l e t where they s t i l l carry on
farming operations.
Mrs. Howes, on her a r r i v a l i n Alberta, immediately
became interested i n the Women's Institutes and served four
years as Constituency Convener; as Director of D i s t r i c t 3
