Struna attended the country school of Pine H i l l and
the Red Deer High School. At the early age of sixteen she
was teaching on a permit at Cayley, Alberta. Later she a t t ended
Normal School i n Calgary and two years of summer school.
She taught at Vest holme an * Pairlands west of Penhold and i n
the mining town of Nordegg.
In 1919 Struna married Swain Swainson, also of Icelandic
origin, from the neighboring d i s t r i c t of Burnt Lake.
There they established a home and reared a family of s i x sons
and four daughters. Their children are on farms or i n business
i n Central Alberta, except one daughter i n Nelson, B. C. In
November 1953 the whole community of Red Deer Vest mourned
with them the tragic death of t h e i r eldest son, Alfred and his
wife i n a highway accident. Alfred operated the old home farm
of the Sigurdson's i n Pine H i l l and l e f t three small children.
In January 1923 Mrs. H. R. McDougall of Penhold, Constituency
Convener, organized the Burnt Lake Women's Institute
and Struna Swainson became the f i r s t secretary- treasurer. Since
then she has served as president, director, standing committee
chairman, or i n some other h e l p f u l capacity.
She became Constituency Convener of Red Deer Vest, then
Director of D i s t r i c t 3 from 1951 to 1955. She also served on
the Curriculum Committee of the Department of Education and as
P r o v i n c i a l Convener for the A* V. I. for Education. As a member
of the Council of the Alberta Women's Institutes she made fast
friends by her f a i r decisions and calm demeanor.
