A much- loved and valuablevmember of the Irma Women's
I n s t i t u t e Is Mrs. P. Thurston. Helen Ada, only c h i l d of
Edward and E l l e n Rogers, was born i n Porthcawl, South Wales,
i n 1889. Her mother passed away when " N e l l i e " was a small
c h i l d , and she moved with her f a t h e r to Gaerau, a v i l l a ge
near C a r d i f f , the c a p i t a l of Wales. She attended St. Pagan's
Church School. Getting an education a t that time was no
mean feat - i t meant a walk of three miles on muddy lanes
and across f i e l d s i n a l l kinds of weather. Every vestige
of mud had t o be cleaned o f f before pupils were allowed
to enter the school - o r the cane was l i b e r a l l y applied.
A f t e r passing through a l l the classes a t St. Pagan's, N e l l ie
Rogers was retained as a teacher's a s s i s t a n t.
In 1910 she was married i n Caerau Church to Frederick
Thomas Thurston, youngest member of a family of ten c h i l d r e n.
They passed the years from then u n t i l 1927 landscaping,
lumbering. In the south of England, and on a farm near Barry,
South Wales. Eight c h i l d r e n were born during t h i s time.
In 1927 economic conditions i n South Wales influenced
them i n t h e i r d e c i s i o n to emigrate to Canada, and i n A p r i l
1927 they a r r i v e d i n Irma. Here they have remained, adding
one more c h i l d to t h e i r family. At present there are a l so
29 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. They are
l o o k i n g forward to c e l e b r a t i n g t h e i r s i x t y - f i f t h wedding
anniversary i n June.
Mrs. Thurston i s a f f e c t i o n a t e l y known i n the d i s t r i c t
as " Grandma Thurston". Her cheerfulness, l o v i n g kindness
and generosity have endeared her to the many f r i e n d s she
has made i n almost f i f t y years i n Irma.
