MRS. RICHARD BARNES
Leola Sutherland was born I n 1918 i n A f t o n , Tennessee,
U. S . A. and moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J .
Sutherland to A l b e r t a . They l i v e d i n s e v e r a l places i n c l u d ing
Olds where Leola completed her high school term before
moving with her parents to E n i l d a , J u l y 1, 1930.
Curing the depression years, i t was almost impossible
to further her education, so, she helped her parents on the
homestead. She enjoyed r u r a l l i f e - the dances, p i c n i c s,
and card p a r t i e s.
On December 4, 1930, Leola joined the B i g Meadow Women f s
I n s t i t u t e a t a meeting a t her parents home. She became
s e c r e t a r y - t r e a s u r e r from 1933 - 35•
On February 3 » 1939t Leola married Richard Barnes. Two
boys, Alan and Eldon, and one g i r l , E i l l e e n , were born t o
t h i s union. These were busy years and she was unable t o
attend meetings only as an occasional v i s i t o r.
In 1947 her husband passed away. In need of companionship
and outside i n t e r e s t , Leola became an a c t i v e member
again and she served as secretary f o r four years. During
the next few years, she h e l d many o f f i c e s i n her branch as
w e l l as Constituency secretary and Convener. She was very
i n t e r e s t e d and a c t i v e i n the G i r l s ' Club, acting as superv
i s o r . In 1962, a bus was chartered and 40 g i r l s were taken
to the Olds G i r l s * Club Convention. For f o u r years, many
hours were spent i n a s s i s t i n g the g i r l s to prepare f o r
achievement days.
Leola has many hobbies and she i s a member of the
