Laura E l l e n Clark was " born i n the h i s t o r i c town of
Niagara- On- The- Lake, Ontario, on September 13, 1886. She
was the youngest of the family and so she remained at home
u n t i l she wed John Sheppard on January 8, 1912. They came
to the Peace River country and homesteaded i n the sparsely
settled d i s t r i c t of Rio Grande.
I t was when Mrs. Sheppard was attending a baby c l i n ic
held i n the Rio Grande school house i n 1923, along with
several other pioneer mothers of the area that a suggestion
was made that an i n s t i t u t e be organized. It i s believed
that a Mrs. pindlay, wife of Reverend Pindlay of Lake Saskatoon,
a Mrs. Carlysle and Nurse V/ atherston were i n attendance
that day and talked of the advantages of the work of
