for five years; as Vice- President of the Alberta Women's
Institutes for two years before being called to assume the
duties of the P r o v i n c i a l President i n May 1955, a position
which she was v/ ell q u a l i f i e d to f i l l . She was one of the
f i v e delegates from Alberta to the T r i e n n i a l Conference
of the A. G. W. W. held i n Toronto i n 1953 and was chosen again
to attend the 1956 Triennial Conference of the A. G. W. W. i n
Ceylon representing the Alberta Women's Institutes.
Beside her interest i n her family - she has three
married daughters and several grandchildren - and her church,
she has been President of the l o c a l Red Cross and a member
of the Executive of the Canadian Association of Consumers.
On two occasions she has taken courses i n C i v i l Defence at
Arnprior, Ontario, and has f i l l e d many places of honour as
b e f i t s the President of the Alberta Women's Institutes, such
as being an o f f i c i a l board member of the Canadian Cancer
Society, the Rural Education Board, the Alberta Mental Health
Association and others.
Mrs. Howes holds a firm b e l i e f i n the value of the
Alberta Women's Institutes for the r u r a l woman. She has unt
i r i n g energy and enthusiasm which she i s able to transmit to
others.
Mrs. Howes was elected as Second Vice- President of
the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada at the National
Convention held i n Ottawa i n October 1957.
