MRS. AUBREY WOOD
A l i c e L. Carswell was born i n Oshawa, Ontario, on
August 20, I884, of B r i t i s h l i n e a g e . Her f a t h e r , a newspaper
e d i t o r i n i n d i f f e r e n t health, was ordered to change
climate by h i s doctor and he came West seeking a new home
f o r h i s f a m i l y . He homesteaded i n the Horn H i l l d i s t r i ct
a few m i l e s east of Penhold. His f a m i l y followed the next
year, t r a v e l l i n g on the f i r s t t r a i n between Calgary and Red
Deer on June 22, 1891.
The Carswell f a m i l y were amongst the f i r s t s e t t l e rs
i n the d i s t r i c t and A l i c e became one of the f i r s t pupils t o
attend Horn H i l l school. She f i n i s h e d her s c h o o l i n g i n Red
Deer before i t could boast of having a High School. In 1906
A l i c e took Normal t r a i n i n g i n Calgary, but u n f o r t u n a t e l y cont
r a c t e d typhoid fever and was unable to f i n i s h the f o u r month
course.
