MRS, p. N. CUNNINGHAM
Mrs. D. N. Cunningham was born E l i z a Scott a t Catford,
Kent, England i n 1902. She attended school, ther<% u n t il
her parents moved t o Calgary i n 1917. She continued her
education a t Stanley Jones school f o r a short time before
moving to the Cottonwood d i s t r i c t west of I n n i s f a i l,
On December 14, 1921 she married D. N, Cunningham a t
I n n i s f a i l . Tney have two daughters and two sons.
Mrs. Cunningham ( Ivy, as she i s known) joined Mary
R i l e y Women's I n s t i t u t e . When t h i s branch became too
l a r g e , a second branch was organized i n 1935. known as the
Cottonwood W. I . Mrs. Cunningham was a charter member and
the f i r s t president. Despite poor roads and other d i f f i c u l t
i e s , she, l i k e a l l pioneer women, was seldom absent and she
played a very a c t i v e part i n a l l phases of the work. During
World War Two she a s s i s t e d i n sending d i t t y bags and p a r c e ls
overseas.
In the 1950' s when the membership dwindled, her e f f o r ts
and perserverance kept i t going. To r a i s e funds, she convened
lunches a t dances a t Moose Mountain h a l l f o r s e v e r a l years.
She served as s e c r e t a r y - t r e a s u r e r f o r twelve years as w e ll
as president a t d i f f e r e n t times.
From i960 - 64, she was Constituency Convener f o r the
I n n i s f a i l Constituency. She attented many conferences and
conventions as w e l l as a Cancer Workshop.
Her hobbles are k n i t t i n g and flower gardening. Since
r e t u r n i n g to Sowden, she has been a c t i v e i n the Hebeka Lodge,
a member o f the United Church Women and has been president
