She married Arthur Hives, son o f another pioneer f a m i ly
i n 1907, hut 1910 found her a widow with two c h i l d r e n , a son
and a daughter. Pour years l a t e r she again married - t h i s time
to Aubrey Wood, a handsome Englishman, who has served Penhold
and d i s t r i c t as Postmaster f o r n e a r l y f o r t y years. Another son
was added t o her f a m i l y and, apart from a few years spent i n
Saskatchewan early i n t h e i r married l i f e , the couple have made
t h e i r home i n Penhold since that time.
With outstanding community s p i r i t , the Woods have been
a c t i v e i n every worth- while p r o j e c t that has been undertaken i n
the d i s t r i c t . Staunch Red Cross supporters, e s p e c i a l l y during
the two World War*; devoted members of St. George's Anglican
Church — Mrs. Wood has h e l d the p o s i t i o n of s e c r e t a r y of the
Women's A u x i l i a r y f o r the past twenty years- and she has been
honoured with a L i f e Membership i n t h i s Anglican o r g a n i z a t i o n.
Mrs. A l i c e Wood joined the Penhold ¥ . 1 . i n 1918, tv/ o years
a f t e r i t was organized, and was s e c r e t a r y f o r most of the t r y i ng
years a f t e r the F i r s t World. War when the branch b u i l t the Penhold
Memorial H a l l i n honour of the d i s t r i c t boys who had l o s t t h e ir
l i v e s .
A l o y a l member, Mrs. Wood seldom missed a meeting and
took her p a r t i n every branch p r o j e c t , year i n and year out. I t
was A l i c e Wood who wrote the account of the Penhold branch that
appears i n the A l b e r t a Women's I n s t i t u t e H i s t o r y . I t was because
of her l o y a l t y to the branch f o r f o r t y one years that prompted
the members t o present her w i t h a L i f e Membership i n the A l b e r ta
