She was. married t o W i l l i a m Stewart i n Scotland i n 1913
and came to L e s s e r Slave Lake, A l b e r t a . A year l a t e r they
moved t o Peace R i v e r Crossing. L i v i n g three hundred miles
from a r a i l w a y , Mrs. Stewart could u n f o l d many a t a l e of pioneering
on the Peace.
In 1919 she became i n t e r e s t e d i n t he work o f the A l b e r ta
Women's I n s t i t u t e s and f o r many years was president o f the
Peace R i v e r Branch. She attended her f i r s t A. W. I. P r o v i n c i al
Convention i n 1921 when the f i r s t Federated Women's I n s t i t u t es
of Canada Board met i n Edmonton also.- She served a t v a r i o u s
times as Constituency Convener and, from 1937 t o 1941, was Prov
i n c i a l P r e s i d e n t . From 1941 to 1943 she was E d i t o r o f the
' Home and Country'.
I t was i n September 1939 t h a t Mrs. Stewart and her husband
were on board the i l l - f a t e d Athenia when i t was torpedoed,
hut the Stewarts were amongst those who were brought t o s a f e t y.
During the Second World War i n 1943 and 1944 Mrs. Stewart d i d
war service i n the German D i v i s i o n of the Censorship Department,
Ottawa. Shortly a f t e r her r e t u r n t o Peace R i v e r a L i f e Members
h i p i n the Federated Women's I n s t i t u t e s o f Canada was awarded
her by her home branch.
In 1947 Mr. and Mrs. Stewart moved t o V i c t o r i a , B r i t i sh
Columbia, where i n the s p r i n g of 1950 Mr. Stewart was suddenly
c a l l e d by death. Mrs. Stewart has continued to l i v e i n V i c t o r i a .
In 1955 Mrs. Stewart returned to A l b e r t a f o r a v i s i t and graced
