- 2 - Mrs. J. Sawyer, S o c i a l S e r v i c e Convenor, I n v i t e d Mr. Hogan, Welfare D i r e c t o r i n Red Deer, to speak to the l a d i e s . Mr. Hogan t o l d us what h i s o f f i c e takes care o f . Some of these are P u b l i c A s s i s t a n c e ( R e l i e f ) , S o c i al A s s i s t a n c e and C h i l d Welfare. Now for a b r i e f resume of some o t h e r p r o j e c t s our W. I. undertook i n 1962. At a s p e c i a l meeting i n January we decided to c a t e r to the Open B o n s p e i l . This turned out to be an u t t e r l y d r e a d f u l , lengthy process. The C u r l i n g Club, being equipped w i t h n a t u r a l i c e , was h i t by a Chinook which was very hard on the i c e and the W. I. l a d l e s . However, we made a s u b s t a n t i a l p r o f i t In 2 weeks of o f f a g a i n , on again b o n s p e l l l n g. Mrs. C. F. Lawrence and Mrs. H. L. Ahrens, mother- in- law and mother, ( r e s p e c t i v e l y ) o f t h i s w r i t e r came out to our February meeting and gave a t a l k on ceramics. As a r e s u l t , a c l a s s of 8 l a d l e s were taught the fundamentals of ceramics in the home of Mrs. D. Lawrence i n a course of 8 l e s s o n s. We bought a 75 cup c o f f e e urn i n c o n j u n c t i o n w i t h the l o c al F. IJ. A. group of which most of our husbands are members. This has been a tremendous boon to us. We a l l donated our Nabob c o f f e e coupons and sent away f o r sheets, p i l l o w cases, tea s e t , a b a l l and bowl c o v e r s . These were mostly used f o r p r i z e s f o r the H o r t i c u l t u r a l show. We r a f f l e d the tea s e t. We held an a u c t i o n s a l e - everyone donated something, be i t an A f r i c a n v i o l e t or a cushion cover. Mrs. A l l e n rendered her s e r v i c e s as an a u c t i o n e e r. Mrs. E. P i e r c e and Mrs. J. Sawyer attended the Biannual Conference i n Red Deer i n d r e a d f u l weather. They both came back t a l k i n g about M a r i l y n Dorohoy's hat. In c o n j u n c t i o n w i t h our Branch H i s t o r y , we c o l l e c t e d a l l the " Home and C o u n t r i e s " and have compiled them i n one book. On reading the o ld minutes f o r our h i s t o r y , we found them to c o n t a i n numerous motions s a y i n g that our meetings w i l l s t a r t 2: 00 P. M. We'll have to make a motion a g a i n sometime soon to t h i s same e f f e c t. We catered to an F. U. A. Convention d i n n e r and served baked ham and s c a l l o p p e d potatoes with pie f o r d e s s e r t . For a f t e r n o o n tea, we served p i e again, but the men didn't seem to n o t i c e or care about t h i s . Of course, on t h i s day the power was turned o f f f o r one reason or another and a l l the telephones were out of o r d e r . The l a d l e s w i t h e l e c t r i c stoves were running to l a d i e s w i t h propane ovens and t r y i n g to crowd 2 oven loads i n t o 1. However, the men got t h e i r d i n n e r and were none the w i s e r or u n h e a l t h i e r . We hope t h is w i l l become an annual a f f a i r. We helped a l o c a l f a m i l y who l o s t most o f t h e i r c l o t h i n g and bedding i n a f i r e and donated money to the Cancer S o c i e t y . We a l s o paid a l l our dues, paid f o r our branch h i s t o r y , donated to 2 s c h o l a r s h i p funds, paid f o r a C. A. C. renewal as w e l l as paid f o r our v a r i o u s p r i z e s . We donated to the r e t a r d e d c h i l d r e n ' s s c h o o l and paid community c e n t r e r e n t a l s. We r a i s e d t h i s money by our c a t e r i n g Jobs, p u t t i n g on monthly dances, and our tea and r a f f l e. Mrs. J . Warke made W. I. aprons to be used by our members when s e r v i n g at the H a n d i c r a f t Tea. We donated $ 4.00 to Gaetz United Church In Red Deer to be used i n memory of Mrs. E. Beck, a former member. Our sympathy was extended to Mrs. B. A l l e n on the death of her beloved husband i n August.
