1901 EVENTS
We s t a r t e d 1961 with Mrs. E. P i e r c e as P r e s i d e n t , Mrs. L. Dawson
as S e c r e t a r y and Mrs. R. Brown, t r e a s u r e r . For our b i r t h d a y b a r r e l t h i s year,
we paid 5^ a pound over or under 135 pounds w i t h 50^ being the maximum payment.
The year s t a r t e d w i t h Mrs. W. D. Smith j o i n i n g our W. I. and
making a t o t a l of 15 members.
E a r l y i n the year, we made plans to put on a v a r i e t y program
which was put on i n March and A p r i l . The program was a very b i g success, with
everyone, members and husbands t a k i n g p a r t i n i t . We were asked to put i t on at
Crossroads H a l l by the M i l n e r t o n W. I. and a l s o by the H i l l e n d Community. Much
fun was enjoyed as we p r a c t i s e d f o r t h i s program. When we were d e c i d i n g what to
name t h i s program, Mrs. R. T. B e c k i n g s a l e suggested we c a l l I t a program, " Show"
seemed to suggest a s t r i p - t e a s e . So we c a l l e d i t " V a r i e t y Program. At the time
when we were p r e s e n t i n g our program, mumps were doing the rounds of our community.
Not only c h i l d r e n had them, but many mothers a l s o , and one of our l e a d i n g l a d i es
had them at the time of the H i l l e n d p r e s e n t a t i o n . Mrs. C. Lawrence, on very short
n o t i c e h u r r i e d l y l e a r n e d t h i s part and went on stage, i n s t e a d of Mrs. W. Wnittemore.
At a " clean- up" of the Pine Lake s c h o o l , the l a d i e s were s c r u b b i n g w a l l s and
windows and cuing Mrs, Lawrence i n on her l i n e s . Her s c r i p t , needless to say, was
v e r y damp and grubby at the end of the day, but she knew her p a r t . Mr. John Sawyer
i s to be thanked f o r the p i c t u r e s he took of our program.
Our W. I. sponsored monthly dances d u r i n g the w i n t e r . These were
much enjoyed by c h i l d r e n and a d u l t s . In A p r i l , Mrs. R. T. B e c k i n g s a l e and Mrs. D. A.
Lawrence attended the Cancer Workshop i n Red Deer and were our c a p t a i n s f o r the
cancer canvass. Instead of canvassing the d i s t r i c t , we donated the proceeds of
our A p r i l dance to the Cancer S o c i e t y . The donation was $ 3 7 . 8 0 . We, of course,
c e l e b r a t e d our f i f t h b i r t h d a y i n A p r i l . Our p r e s i d e n t , Mrs. E. P i e r c e and
s e c r e t a r y , Mrs. L. Dawson attended the Home and School conference h e l d i n Red Deer
a t the H o l i d a y Inn on A p r i l 7 t h . The l a d i e s had t h e i r p i c t u r e taken when
Mrs. Pierce was d i l i g e n t l y l o o k i n g f o r a dime she knew she had, but couldn't f i n d.
I n May, our branch packed and shipped a huge box of c l o t h i n g f or
the U n i t a r i a n S e r v i c e Committee. Our S o c i a l S e r v i c e Convenor, Mrs. L. Dawson,
was r e s p o n s i b l e f o r t h i s . Mrs. B. A l l e n , our h a n d i c r a f t convenor r e p o r t e d a
good showing from our branch. At the h a n d i c r a f t t e a , our l a d i e s r e c e i v e d e i g ht
second and two t h i r d p r i z e s.
Mrs. L. Dawson was our delegate to the Edmonton Convention in
May and reported a wonderful but busy time. She heard Dr. Nancy Adams and
Mrs. Royland as w e l l as a number of other speakers. Mrs. Royland, whose home
i s i n B. C. is P r e s i d e n t of F. W. I. C.
I n June our branch h e l d a j o i n t p i c n i c w i t h the F. U. A. l o c a l at
Red Lodge Park. Sawyers a g a i n remembered t h e i r camera. The F. U. A. s u p p l i ed
ice- cream, e t c . and a wonderful time was had by a l l .
In J u l y , Mrs. J . Sawyer and Mrs. L. Dawson v o l u n t e e r e d to a t t e nd
a day at Farm Women's Week. The l a d i e s , being t i m i d m o t o r i s t s , kept to the back
roads to Olds. They had a very lengthy, harrassed t r i p , dodging road c o n s t r u c t i on
work and passing b i g machinery, but enjoyed a cooking school demonstration put
on by Calgary Power. Mrs. Dawson was the r e c i p i e n t of a p l a s t i c " Ever ready"
apron.
In August we c e l e b r a t e d Mr. & Mrs. E. P i e r c e ' s S i l v e r A n n i v e r s a ry
by s u r p r i s i n g them w i t h a p a r t y at the Pine Lake Community C e n t r e . Mrs. R. C l u t t on
was in charge of the entertainment and we had a very gay time. We presented
Mr. 4 Mrs. P i e r c e w i t h a c o f f e e t a b l e.
