CITY AND DISTRICT NEWS RED DEER. ALBERTA MONDAY, MARCH 12th, 196: W . I . T o H o l d D i s t r i ct M e e t I n C i t v I n 1 9 6 4 • The twelfth biennial conference of District 3 Albcrla Women's Institute concluded a two-day meet at the Capri Motor Hotel Saturday afternoon. More than 100 delegates from the district ranging from Pen-bold to Lcduc and border lo border enthusiastically acclaimed the accommodation and facilities in Red Deer, and have decided to hold their next district conference here, early in March of 1964. The provincial conference will be held on the alternate year. 1963 in Edmonton, and president Mrs. M G. Roberts of Dmmheller urged a large representation for a successful conference. One delegate and one visitor are expected from each branch A majority vole of W. I. branches throughout the province indicated approval in sending a delegate lo the A. C. W. W. conference in Australia this fall. Mrs. Roberts will represent Alberta at this meeting of the Associated Country Wnir. cn of the World. A travel lund will be esta bl ished th rou g h a 25- cent donation from each member. Of particular interest lo W. I. member* is the world- wide exchange of aprons at the conference. The apron received by Alberta will be raffled among its members. In hei address to the meeting. - Mrs Roberts reported a feeling of great responsibility . in speaking for the 5.000 women who comprise the AWI membership but pleasure in the fact that Alberta Women's Institute controls its own affairs. In some provinces the W. I. comes under the department of extension and must consult with councillors before making any decisions. Mrs. Roberts appeajed for support of the Home and Country, the W. I. magazine and financial support of S1.00 per member for the Adelaide Hoodless Foundation Fund. Preservation of the founder's birthplace has been a major federated project. Canadian W. I. s have contributed 53,000 towards the Food for Hunger Campaign and are working toward an objective of 130.000. In conclusion, Mrs. Roberts offered high commendation for a we 11- organized conference and praise for Mrs. C. A. Quail, district director from Round Hill for her efficiency in conducting the two- day session. Constituency conveners chaired workshop discussions of pertinent interest to all members. Mrs. R. Tozer and Mrs. R Pren-dergast of Red Deer covered the subject program planning. Various ideas were presented and it was generally agreed that a planned program is most essential. They expressed the hope that e\ eryone would have a program theme and carry it through. Mrs. I. W. Francis of Burnt Lake and Mrs. T. Gee. Warburg, reported on the difficult subject of financing the organization. Most members do not want an increase in membership fee. but unless they contribute more generously to AWI or pay their obligations lo FWIC and ACWW it will be inevitable. Mrs. G. Ballhorn, Wetaskiwin. reported ideas for maintaining and increasing membership. It was felt the W. I. had as much if not more to offer than many other organizations. Constituency and district conferences were discussed by i Mrs. R. Woof, Ohaton, and Mrs. D. Jackson, West Rose. It was agreed they are fulfilling their purpose and the only disat-isfaction voiced was in the repetitious reports, i Mrs. C. A. Quail, Mrs. M. G. Roberts and Mrs. C. Davies answered enquiries submitted in the question box. The W. I. feels that during the 65 years since its inception it has been doing the work which the Voice of Women is now promoting. As members of the A. C. W. W. they belong to an organizalion of 7.000.000 women in lands all over the world who are striving for peace and understanding of themselves and theii neighbors.
