I 9 6 0 EVENTS The Pine Lake W. I. began i 9 6 0 w i t h Mrs. L. Dawson as P r e s i d e n t, and Mrs. R. C l u t t o n as S e c r e t a r y . We s t a r t e d the year by s t r i v i n g never to be l a t e f o r a meeting. Those l a t e had to sew a patch on an apron. Under t h is patch such persons had to put the amount of money her conscience warranted. Our b i g g e s t p r o j e c t f o r t h i s year was the h e l p i n g of a burnt out and needy f a m i l i e s . We sponsored a b e n e f i t dance f o r the D i c k Boyden f a m i ly of Lousana and netted $ 245. 0 0 . The mother of t h i s f a m i l y l o s t her l i f e due to the d e s t r u c t i v e f i r e of t h e i r home. We donated $ 7 . 2 5 to the W. Stevenson D w e l l i n g Fund. Their home was a l s o destroyed by f i r e . This money was obtained by h o l d i n g an I r i s h A u c t i on Each member had to b r i n g one a r t i c l e to the March meeting. These a r t i c l e s were s k i l l f u l l y a u c t i o n e d o f f by the hostess Mrs. E. P i e r c e . With S t . P a t r i c k s day i n mind the name " I r i s h A u c t i o n " was used. A l a r g e amount of c l o t h i n g was gathered at the b e g i n n i n g of the y e a r . This c l o t h i n g was given to burnt out f a m i l i e s and to other needy f a m i l i es i n our own immediate a r e a. Our Christmas c h a r i t y hamper of food and c l o t h i n g was sent to the Smith f a m i l y of Lousana. This f a m i l y was i n need because of medical expense f or cancer. I n January, we i n v i t e d three W. I.' s, Lousana, Hogadone and H i l l s d o w n to our meeting and had as guest speaker, M r s . W MacFarlane from the B a l m o r a l W. I. She gave us a very e n l i g h t e n i n g t a l k on the A. C. W. W. conference h e l d i n Edinburgh, S c o t l a n d and on t h e i r European t o u r , w h i l e they were abroad. Another guest speaker d u r i n g the year was Miss Munz, A s s i s t a nt Home Economist, who spoke on the i n t e r e s t i n g t o p i c of " P r i n c i p l e s of F r e e z i n g " and who showed some very worthwhile f i l m s on the steps of f r e e z i n g foods. One of our money r a i s i n g p r o j e c t s was each member t a k i n g 50^ ( t a l e n t money) and seeing by how much she could i n c r e a s e i t s v a l u e by the end of the year. Members made copper j e w e l l e r y , crocheted d o i l i e s , k n i t m i t t s , s o ld p l a n t s , h e l d c o f f e e p a r t i e s , and r a f f l e d home- made candy. This money n e t t e d us $ 1 5 . 0 0 which we donated t o the U n i t a r i a n S e r v i c e Committee. We held a Remembrance Tea which was very s u c c e s s f u l . We sold aprons, h a n d i c r a f t a r t i c l e s and t e a . There was a l s o a f i s h pond f o r the c h i l d r e n. Some of the c h i l d r e n were p r e t t y b i g , due I guess, to the drawing of a r t i c l es from the pond. A l t o g e t h e r we made $ 4 3 . 0 0 a t t h i s t e a. We held a F l a g Whist which r e a l i z e d a s m a l l crowd but everyone had a good time. The proceeds of $ 1 4 . 2 5 were donated to the Cancer S o c i e t y . We c a t e r e d to a Ladies B a l l Tournament at Tent Town and made $ 2 1 . 0 0 . We sold Christmas cards and made $ 2 3 . 0 0. In September, we sponsored the H o r t i c u l t u r a l Show at Pine Lake. C l a s s e s of canned f r u i t s and v e g e t a b l e s , f r e s h v e g e t a b l e s , g r a i n s , f l o w e r s and b a k i n g , were entered by a d u l t s and c h i l d r e n . The e n t r i e s were very s m a l l t h is year due to the severe h a i l experienced i n the area i n J u l y . The judges f o r t h is show were Mrs. S p r o u l e , D i s t r i c t Home Economist and Mr. Duncan, A s s i s t a nt D i s t r i c t A g r i c u l t u r i s t . The winning competitors i n the a d u l t group were Mrs. J. Morgan, a m i l k j u g ; i n the c h i l d r e n ' s c l a s s , Ann Pope, a pen and p e n c i l s e t ; and
