ORIGIN OF THE PINE LAKE W. I F o r some time t h e r e seemed t o be a need f o r a broad program of i n s p i r a t i o n and fun t o meet the needs of busy young mothers and grandmothers a l i k e. The W. I. program was e x p l a i n e d to a group of l a d i e s at the home of Mrs. A. Pope e a r l y i n 1 9 5 6 , by Mrs. John R i c h a r d s , Mrs. S. Swainson and Mrs. F. D a l l a i r e , long time members of the Women's I n s t i t u t e . Many d i s t r i c t l a d i e s f e lt they were a l r e a d y o b l i g a t e d , but i n t e r e s t was growing. Husbands were i n t r o d u c ed t o W. I. aims over the d i n n e r and supper t a b l e. With twins propped up i n the back seat of a 19^ 9 C h e v r o l e t , Mrs. R. Brown and Mrs. J . Sawyer proceeded w i t h a door to door canvass and succeeded i n i n t e r e s t i n g many l a d i e s i n f o r m i n g a branch. Mrs. D. Lawrence contacted Mrs. John R i c h a r d s , c o n s t i t u e n c y convenor, and on A p r i l 1 7 t h , 1956, at the home of Mrs. R. Brown, the Pine Lake Branch was born. P r o v i n c i a l S e c r e t a r y , Mrs. R. W. Prendergast was a l s o i n attendance a t t h i s meeting. Nine l a d i e s , r e p r e s e n t i n g two l o c a l d i s t r i c t s , became c h a r t e r members w i t h Mrs. E. Connor as p r e s i d e n t , Mrs. R. Brown v i c e - p r e s i d e n t and Mrs. D. Lawrence, s e c r e t a r y - t r e a s u r e r. A new b e g i n n i n g was being made t h a t was to l e a d i t s members i n t o a wide f e l l o w s h i p and to s t r i v e t o know the g r e a t human h e a r t common t o a l l in home and country.
