1938 EVENTS 1958 proved to be a busy year for the eighteen members answering the r o l l c a l l . Eleven meetings and one picnic were held during the year. Average number of v i s i t o r s two. Me were pleased to welcome Mrs. R. Clutton, Mrs. C. Clutton and Mrs. E. Ibel as newcomers to our branch. Beginning February 14th, a St. John's Ambulance course in f i r st aid was held at Pine Lake school. Approximately twenty five people from Pine Lake area attended. After six weeks of weekly instruction an examination was held In f i r s t aid, a r t i f i c i a l respiration and in the use of splints and bandages. Our Instructor was Mr. Klrkerburg from Trochu, an ex- R. CM. P. Mr. W. Warke, provincial examiner, a doctor from Parson's c l i n i c and one lady, gave US OttP examination In a l l three courses. Coffee was served at the end of the day and at a later date a l l the candidates were given their Five- Year St. John's Ambulance c e r t i f i c a t e s. This above report submitted by Mrs. J. C. Warke. As a follow up to the St. John's Ambulance course, the branch sponsored a f i f t e e n minute radio program on CKRD, Red Deer, on this theme. Mrs. R. Brown acted as moderator to a panel of f i v e : Mrs. J. Sawyer, W. I. member Instrumental in setting up the course; Mr. G. Beck, Pine Lake Resort owner; Mr. Francis Sawyer, truck driver; Mr. E. Beckingsale, a farmer; and Mrs. S. Mitchell, housewife and mother. This effort proved to be enjoyable and very worthwhile. On March 2 8 , our branch became a member of the Canadian Association of Consumers. On A p r i l 9th, a f l a g whist was held at the Pine Lake school in aid of the Cancer Society. Approximately $ 20.00 was realized. Mental Health was another main project of the year. Stemming from a reading of Dr. Etzhorn's address by Mrs. E. Pierce early In the year the study was culminated by films shown by Mr. Miller in the f a l l and a canvass of our area for funds. Approximately $ 5 0 . 0 0 was sent to the Canadian Mental Health Association. We had a few worries when a l l the receipt books did not turn up. After much searching and letter writing, we eventually got everything straightened tut. In conjunction with this project, charity g i f t s and magazines were sent to the P. T. S. in Red Deer. May found our two- year- old group busy with tea and conference preparation. Mrs. D. Lawrence brought our branch to the face by taking second prize in the constituency contest for program books. Many ladles placed well with their sewing at the handicraft tea. Summer meant a picnic at Tent- Town, with Mr. & Mrs. D. Lawrence as hosts, and a v i s i t to Balmoral W. I., enjoyed by the four ladles who were able to attend. The f a l l program found the branch extremely busy again. On September 13th the Annual Horticultural show was held. Family group prize went to Blake Aliens, individual prize to Mrs. J. Sawyer and the children's prize to Marjorle Brown. A special feature of the show was an outstanding display of g l a d i o l i by Mr. Clay, Red Deer. A bazaar and tea was held on November 1 5 t h . Net proceeds were A 196 pound wool shipment in an order of $ 2 5 6 . 0 0 was taken to monton by Mrs. D. Lawrence. Premiums from the order were a satin bound mforter, patch mat, sheets and pillow cases.
