I was working around the kitchen one day early i n the spring of 1964, when the phone rang. It turned out to be a friend in one of the adjoining d i s t r i c t s wanting to know i f there was a woman's club i n this d i s t r i c t that would be interested i n forming a children's garden club group as they had one working very well i n their d i s t r i c t. It was a f f i l i a t e d with the Red Deer Horticultural Society. So naturally being a W. I. member, I took i t to our f i r s t meeting where i t was taken up by a committee of three ladies: Mrs. A. Allen, Mrs. J. Warke and Mrs. L. As our d i s t r i c t was so scattered, two groups were formed for that purpose. We had the bed luck to choose a beastly cold evening for our inspection as i t was d r i z z l i n g with rain. We dug those children out of their homes to show us their great efforts and really, i t was wonderful what they had achieved. In the end i t turned out to be a t i e for top honors so the Horticultural Society settled the t i e by compensating both garden owners, Smiley Douglas and Marjorie Brown, by presenting them each with a ribbon and a cheque for two dollars. The season ended with a grand wiaier roast i n Roy Brown's yard where a l l the children were compensated by a small sum of one dollar for their wonderful effort. Since then six children have been given ribbons of merit printed by Mrs. E. Fierce, for the top six gardens. Hats off to our young folks and may they a l l j o i n us again i n 1965. Seven, twenty- minute classes were held per day. Children ranged in age from six to fourteen. Of the 63 children enr o l l e d , 46 took a f i n a l test at the conclusion of the ten- lesson course and received the Pine Lake Perch Swimming Award cards. In addition 9 swimmers received Red Cross Beginners cards and badges. They were: Susan Warke, Wendy Warke, Margaret Bampfield, Karen Bampfield, Harry Morgan, Betty Busby, Edward
