PREFACE T h i s book i s the s t o r y of the Pine Lake Women's I n s t i t u t e . The story t e l l s of how our W. I. was formed and i t s t r i a l s and rewarding moments s i n c e then. The members of t h i s W. I. owe a l o t o f the success of t h e i r branch to t h e i r husbands. The men have d r i v e n m i l e s to c o l l e c t benches and r e t u r n them. They have set up s t a g e s , s o l d hot- dogs and s o f t d r i n k s w h i l e t h e i r wives were p l a y i n g b a l l . They f i r s t had to get the b a l l diamond i n shape. They have made speeches, dressed up as women and d r i v e n t h e i r wives to meetings when the roads were muddy or i c y enough t o prevent the l a d i e s going on t h e i r own, or perhaps the car j u s t wasn't working r i g h t that day. This w r i t e r ' s husband has p u l l e d her r e s u l ts out when she has f i r m l y entrenched her t r u c k i n the d i t c h on the way home from a meeting. S h e ' l l never hear the end of i t . They have served c o f f e e a t a meeting and have even d e l i v e r e d h a n d i c r a f t a r t i c l e s to Mrs. M o r r i s r o e ' s door i n time f or the H a n d i c r a f t Tea. They have carved t u r k e y s and hams, s t i r r e d gravy and d r i ed d i s h e s f o r the W. I. The most o u t s t a n d i n g items i n t h e i r r e p e r t o i r e i s the prov i s i o n they make of gas, not to mention the b a b y s i t t i n g . They have a l l grumbled at one time or a n o t h e r , but they do admit to each other t h a t they are good " W. I. e r s . " The one t h i n g t h a t w o r r i e s our husbands, most of whom seem t o be of the hunter v a r i e t y , i s t h a t our annual W. I. supper always f a l l s on the same day as the opening of the cow moose season. But they are always present at the supper. The committee i n charge of p r e p a r i n g t h i s book have enjoyed t h e i r meeti n g s . It was nice t a l k i n g about a l l the " remember whens". It was much e a s i er t a l k i n g about the past events then w r i t i n g them down on paper. A f t e r much r e s e a r ch and many conferences over c o f f e e or the telephone, we are a l l j u s t l y proud of t h is book. On the f o l l o w i n g pages we have t r i e d to express our gay and not so gay t i m e s , our embarrasing moments about which we can now laugh. One of my most embarrassing moments was when I got up i n f r o n t of the June conference and r e p o r t ed our f i n a n c e s as b e i n g $ 1.83. An item of p a r t i c u l a r i n t e r e s t that arose from a W. I. H o r t i c u l t u r a l Show was a two week course i n community l e a d e r s h i p at the B a n f f School of F i n e A r t s, which was awarded to Mrs. J . Dreeshen and Mr. D. Lawrence. Mr. J . Weestra, a Wheat P o o l r e p r e s e n t a t i v e was judging g r a i n s a t t h i s show. A f t e r o b s e r v i n g these two people i n a c t i o n , Mr. Weestra asked them t o a t t e n d t h i s course as guests of the Wheat P o o l. I have reached, as have the r e s t of our members, the c o n c l u s i o n , that W. I. must be t r u l y w o r t h w h i l e , because we have had some severe headaches out of i t , but we are s t i l l here, and there i s c e r t a i n l y no whisper of dropping i t . As branch h i s t o r i a n , I want t o express my thank yous t o a l l the l a d i es of our W.
