1957 EVENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS With P r e s i d e n t Mrs. J . Dreeshen, V i c e - P r e s i d e n t Mrs. R. L. Brown, S e c r e t a r y - T r e a s u r e r Mrs. J. C. Warke and d i r e c t o r s Mrs. D. A. Lawrence, Mrs. E. R. P i e r c e and Mrs. J . L. Sawyer, the Pine Lake W. I. s t a r t e d i t s 1957 year's work. At the January meeting, Mrs. W. Hawkins, S o c i a l S e r v i c e convenor, r e p o r t e d eighteen Christmas t r e a t bags had been g i v e n to Red Deer S o c i a l S e r v i ce worker, Miss R u s s e l l. A " Talent Sale" was held at our February meeting and proceeds were donated to the Hungarian R e l i e f Fund. Each member donated some a r t i c l e which was auctioned to the h i g h e s t b i d d e r . We netted $ 8.30 from t h i s . A comforter was r a f f l e d o f f d u r i n g the month a t a Whist d r i v e h e l d a t Howell's Lake S c h o o l . This comforter was a wool premium and was won by Mrs. Mary Morgan of Red Deer. Mrs. Morgan i s a daughter of our member, Mrs. W. Hawkins. Two more card p a r t i es were h e l d to help t r e a s u r y funds. A d o n a t i o n was sent to the Sharon S t o b a r t fund i n March. Aid was needed to h e l p Sharon have heart surgery. Our W. I. helped serve at the T w i l i g ht Tea i n Red Deer. Our f i r s t b i r t h d a y was c e l e b r a t e d i n A p r i l , complete w i t h a cake and one candle. Our c o n s t i t u e n c y convenor Mrs. N. Code was a s p e c i a l v i s i t o r. In May, Mrs. W. Whittemore attended the B i - A n n u a l convention in Edmonton. She r e p o r t s - I attended the B i - A n n u a l convention i n Edmonton i n May, 1957. It was a very busy week. The most i n t e r e s t i n g time f o r me was the lunch I had at the same t a b l e as Mrs. Howes, P r o v i n c i a l P r e s i d e n t . We had a very n i c e v i s i t and I found her most i n t e r e s t i n g. Mrs. W. Whittemore. A d o n a t i o n was made to the A g r i c u l t u r e S c h o l a r s h i p Fund, which i s sponsored by the Red Deer c e n t r e c o n s t i t u e n c y . This i s presented to the most d e s e r v i n g student at the Red Deer Composite High S c h o o l. The J u l y meeting was held i n the form of a p i c n i c supper at Lakesend R e s o r t , the home of our member, Mrs. W. Hawkins. Our guests i n c l u d ed members of Pine Lake, H i l l s d o w n , C l e a r v i e w , and H i l l s d o w n V a l l e y I n s t i t u t e s. Supper was served at 5 : 0 0 P. M. a f t e r an enjoyable a f t e r n o o n of games and c o n t e s t s. Our annual H o r t i c u l t u r a l Show was held i n September at the Pine Lake School w i t h e x c e l l e n t a t t e n d a n c e . Mrs. E t h e l Beck was the i n d i v i d u a l winner w i th a p r i z e of $ 2 . 0 0 . The John Warke's won the f a m i l y p r i z e which was a magazine rack. A tea and bazaar was held at the Pine Lake School which n e t t e d us $ 1 0 8 . 7 0 . We r a i s e d money at t h i s f u n c t i o n by having a c h i l d r e n ' s t a b l e , a bake t a b l e , a sewing t a b l e , s e l l i n g Christmas cards and s e r v i n g t e a. Mrs. R. T. B e c k l n g s a l e and Mrs. D. A. Lawrence sent away o l d woollens f o r i n d i v i d u a l s through the W. I. with the W. I. being r e c i p i e n t of the premiums. Our annual W. I. closed supper was held at the Pine Lake School on the f i r s t F r i d a y i n December, which was a very s a t i s f a c t o r y u n d e r t a k i n g . The members of our branch took supper, dishes and t h e i r f a m i l i e s to t h i s evening of fun. T h i s year we i n i t i a t e d our b i r t h d a y b a r r e l by drawing names f or S e c r e t S i s t e r s and remembering them w i t h a s m a l l g i f t i n the month of t h e i r b i r t h d a y.
