D u r i n g the summer t h e W. I . C o r n e r was kept a t t r a c t i v e i n
s p i t e of a s i g n b e i n g p l a n t e d on the a r e a . Swimming l e s s o n s were made a v a i l a
b l e to 60 c h i l d r e n a t West P i n e . Mrs. C l u t t o n r e p o r t s , " Mr. Frank D a l l a i re
conducted the t e n l e s s o n s each Monday and Thursday d u r i n g the summer months.
Because o f i n c l e m e n t weather, f i n a l t e s t i n g was c a r r i e d out a t t h e Red Deer
swimming pool'.'
The second annual barbecue was h e l d a t West P i n e . The W. I.
l a d i e s a i d e d the community i n s e r v i n g the supper and shared i n t h e p r o f i t . We
were a l s o p l e a s e d to c a t e r t o a wedding dance f o r Mr. and Mrs. Ronald McGrath
( nee I s a b e l Moschenross). $ 25.00 was donated toward e s t a b l i s h i n g a community
s k a t i n g r i n k a t t h e H o w e l l ' s Lake S e r v i c e S t a t i o n . Family p r o j e c t s of good
f u n and f e l l o w s h i p began w i t h a J u l y wiener r o a s t f e a t u r i n g a t r e a s u r e hunt.
Monthly f a m i l y swim n i g h t s were h e l d throughout the w i n t e r months a t the Red
Deer R e c r e a t i o n a l Centre. Of the C h r i s t m a s Family Supper, Mrs. C. Lawrence
w r i t e s , " The a n n u a l P i n e Lake F a m i l y Supper was h e l d i n t h e H a l l on December
6 w i t h a p p r o x i m a t e l y 40 persons p r e s e n t . The t a b l e s were t a s t e f u l l y decora
t e d w i t h white c l o t h s and r e d p o i n s e t t a c e n t r e - p i e c e s . Kentucky f r i e d c h i c k en
was served i n p l a c e of t h e u s u a l t u r k e y and ham. This was w e l l r e c e i v e d by
both young and o l d . A s p e c i a l f e a t u r e was the t r i b u t e p a i d to Mrs. F r i e da
Lawrence by P r e s i d e n t Mrs. S m i t h . F r i e d a has moved t o C a l g a r y and a cup and
s a u c e r was p r e s e n t e d to h e r i n r e c o g n i t i o n of t h e y e a r s of d e d i c a t e d e f f o rt
she has g i v e n to the P i n e Lake W. I. s i n c e i t was o r g a n i z e d ".
Conferences and workshops were attended with i n t e r e s t . Mrs.
D. Smith w r i t e s o f h e r i m p r e s s i o n s of t h e March D i s t r i c t 3 B i e n n i a l Conference.
THEME, " Meet the C h a l l e n g e of Year 101". Mrs. J . B i e l i s h , A. W. I. P r o v i n c i a l
P r e s i d e n t , d i r e c t e d her message t o some 150 W. I. d e l e g a t e s a t t e n d i n g the two
day conference a t t h e Granada Inn i n Red Deer.
W. I . i s one o f t h e p u r e l y v o l u n t a r y groups l e f t but we must
assess our p o s i t i o n w i t h regard to today's needs, a d j u s t a c c o r d i n g l y , and move
f o r w a r d . There i s no age l i m i t to t h i s group and d u t i e s must be a d j u s t e d to
age. The p r i v i l e g e of b e l o n g i n g to a group a r e r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s o f d o i n g somet
h i n g f o r t n i s group.

g i v e n from a few o f t h o s e groups who have t r i e d i t . This mainly meant the y e a r ' s
s t u d i e s would be r e l a t e d to a d e f i n i t e theme and each meeting would add somet
h i n g more t o t h a t p a r t i c u l a r s u b j e c t the group had chosen. Everyone should
be i n v o l v e d i n t h e program and i t i s important to have a balance of f u n and
work i n t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n .
Some time was g i v e n t o t h e s u b j e c t of f i n a n c i n g the organi
z a t i o n . There i s a d e f i n i t e need t o changing the s t r u c t u r e of the W. I. f o r
more e f f i c i e n c y . This has l e d t o a need f o r a p r o v i n c i a l o f f i c e w i t h a paid
f u l l time s e c r e t a r y r e o u i r e d . The P r o v i n c i a l O f f i c e Fund has been s e t up w i th
a g o a l o f $ 50,000.00. The i n t e r e s t t o be p a i d f o r t h e s e c r e t a r y Recommendations:
( 1) Committee s e t up by C o u n c i l t o s t u d y and make recommendations r e - the
s t r u c t u r e of t h e o r g a n i z a t i o n w i t h i n the p r o v i n c e w i t h regards to D i s t r i c t and
C o n s t i t u e n c y areas.
( 2) 100 per member per y e a r f o r t r a v e l fund and p a i d the some time as d i s t r i c t
dues and sent d i r e c t l y to c o n s t i t u e n c y convener.
( 3) The P r o v i n c i a l A. W. I. C o u n c i l appoint a committee t o study the f i n a n c i a l
s t r u c t u r e of A. W. I, w i t h p a r t i c u l a r r e f e r e n c e to the p a y i n g of d e l e g a t e s t r a n s
p o r t a t i o n t o p r o v i n c i a l c o n v e n t i o n s and b r i n g r e p o r t t o t h e 1969 convention.
