1959 EVENTS The Pine Lake W. I. S t a r t e d i t s new year January 13th at the home of Mrs. L. Dawson w i t h Mrs. D. A. Lawrence P r e s i d e n t and Mrs. J . Dreeshen, S e c r e t a r y . The b i r t h d a y b a r r e l t h i s year was the drawing of a f o r f e i t , w i th the member paying a c c o r d i n g to what was drawn. Example - a penny f o r every b u t t o n worn. Mrs. S. M i t c h e l l donated a p e n a l t y apron. A patch c o n t a i n i ng a c o n t r i b u t i o n i n p r o p o r t i o n t o the members g u i l t y c o n s c i e n c e , was to be sewn on by the g u i l t y lady as a f i n e f o r b e i n g l a t e , or n e g l e c t of a duty e t c. In January a branch cookbook was s t a r t e d and we a l l s t a r t e d a l a y e t t e which was completed l a t e r. In February, t a l e n t money, of f i f t y cents was given to members to be used to make more. We made $ 2 9 . 5 5 . We a l s o had Cancer f i l m s shown. In A p r i l , we remembered the Ross c h i l d r e n by g i v i n g them g i f ts at E a s t e r . We a l s o h e l d a f l a g whist to r a i s e funds f o r the Cancer s o c i e t y. We made $ 26. 5 0 a t t h i s. In September we held our H o r t i c u l t u r a l Show which had 233 e n t r i e s . Miss Nelson was judge. Family p r i z e went to the Ed E l k i n f a m i l y. Highest i n d i v i d u a l p r i z e went t o Mrs. S. M i t c h e l l . The c h i l d r e n ' s p r i z e was won by Garry E l k i n . The p r i z e l i s t was made on the i n s i d e of a box l i d . As Mrs. Warke presented the p r i z e s , l i t t l e d i d she know t h a t the other s i d e of her l i s t was d i s p l a y i n g two handsome gentlemen modeling S t a n f i e l d underwear. In October we sent a d o n a t i o n of $ 2 5 . 0 0 to the U n i t a r i a n S e r v i ce Committee and we a l s o sent another shipment of wool. November saw us s e l l i n g Christmas cards and wrapping paper a g a i n. In December f o r r o l l c a l l we each donated an a r t i c l e f o r a food hamper and our t e a money was used t o buy Christmas cake s u p p l i e s . This was a l l t u r n e d i n to Miss R u s s e l l i n Red Deer. In February, we purchased a b r i e f c a s e as a b r i b e to get S e c r e t a r i e s . This meeting, h e l d at the home of Mrs. R. C l u t t o n , f e l l on Shrove Tuesday. As a r e s u l t we had pancakes f o r l u n c h. We judged our branch program books and proclaimed Mrs. R. Brown the winner. We held our t h i r d b i r t h d a y i n A p r i l and were served a s u i t a b ly decorated cake f o r l u n c h. An issue of W. I. stamps was announced and orders f o r them were taken from nine members. In May we took part i n the H a n d i c r a f t Tea, w i t h winners from Pine Lake being Mrs. B. A l l e n and Mrs. R. Brown. Our p i c n i c was held at Tent- Town w i t h an enjoyable time but s m a l l turn- out r e p o r t e d . Mrs. R. Underwood was remembered i n the h o s p i t a l on the b i r t h of her son, Ralph. At our August meeting we had four v i s i t o r s from B a l m o r a l W. I. The f o l l o w i n g members were presented w i t h W. I. p i n s , f o r b e i n g past o f f i c e r s;
