Alberta Women s Institutes To Set Up Permanent Office Plans tn set up an office for the Alberta Women's Institutes with a permanent secretary-treasurer were outlined by Mrs. J. Bielish at the annual conference of the Red Deer Centre Constituency Women's Institutes. Mrs. Bielish of Warspite. president of the AWI said the provincial office will be established through voluntary donations from branch institutes. Provincial and national centennial projects were outlined by M r s Bielish as she addressed the 100 delegates attending the conference held at the Knox Presbyterian Church hall. Provincial projects include a scholarship for a student in social work; the completion of a branch history and scrap book; and painting and handicraft competitions. Making Alberta lov-lier has also been adopted by the AWI as a centennial project and M r s . Bielish urged members to participate in this activity. The centennial national conference will be held at Guelph. Ont . in June. 1967 and one of the highlights of the conference will be a visit to the homestead of the founder of women's institutes, Adelaide Hoodless. National centennial projects include the development of physical fitness programs; the writing of a Canadian mosaic which will include the history of crafts in each province; a drawn thread handicraft competition; a poetry writ ing competition; and a citizen ship competition for which mem bers write stories based on a fact taken from Canadian history. Mrs. Bielish told delegates they must accept the responsibilities as well as the priviledges of being a member of an institute and said members should make an effort t. i be informed on as many, topics as possible. Winners in the handicraft competition held in May were Mrs. R. Vanson. North Red Deer W . l . with the highest number of individual points and Mrs. J . B. Smith, second, Hillsdown- Valley W. I. The branch receiving the greatest number of points in the corn-moral, third; and Hillsdown- Yalley, fourth. An award for the best planned and carried oul program of the year was given to Blackfalds W . l . Ealmoral placed second and Pine Lake third. Mrs. Lewis Northey was elected constituency convener replacing Mrs. . J. T. Morrisroe and M i s . H. H. Bjorkeland was chosen secretary. Stand i n g committee chairmen elected were Mrs. S. Powell, agriculture; Mrs. R. C. Dowd, citizenship; Mrs. K. Kuhar, health; and Mrs. E . Hag-an. social service. Standing committee chairmen who will hold their positions for another year are Mrs. G . Stick-land, education; Mrs. J . Nolan, handicraft; Mrs. V. N; rthey t home economics: and Mrs. T. Corrigan. United Nations. Kenneth Stickland. winner of the United Nations public speaking contest addressed the group. Reports were given by the constituency convener, the secrelar-ies of each branch, the presidents of each branch who discussed the pr ject undertaken by their branch during Ihe year, and the standing committee chairmen. Mrs. M. F r i z z e l l provided entertainment. Mrs J.
