1964 EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES Our 1964 year s t a r t e d o f f w i t h Mrs. D. Lawrence a t t e n d i n g the m i l l i n e r y course at Red Deeri T h i s was a hat making course g i v e n at the Red Deer R e c r e a t i on Centre on Jan. 24, 25 & 2 6— F r i d a y n i g h t , Saturday a f t e r n o o n and evenings and Sunday a f t e r n o o n and evening. This course was arranged by Mrs. J . M o r r i s r o e, W. I. Constituency Convener and the Dept. of E x t e n s i o n , U n i v e r s i t y o f A l b e r t a. Having arranged w i t h Grandpa to b a b y s i t , ( Marie and David l i ke t h i s as they get to watch T. V. at a l l h o u r s ) Grandma and I set out to make h a t s. As the course went on and we grew more b e f u d d l e d , we were a w f u l l y g l a d we had each o t h e r f o r m o r a l support. By the end of Saturday, e v e r y t h i n g was f a l l i ng i n t o shape and we had a tarn ( q u i t e cute) n e a r l y completed. Then the bombshell! We were asked to hand our completed tam and notes i n at 1: 00 p. m. Sunday. This was 10: 00 p. m. Saturday. I p i c k e d up my c h i l d r e n and came home and by t h i s time I was wondering how on e a r t h I'd ever become i n v o l v e d w i t h h a t s ! My f a m i ly r a l l i e d and made b r e a k f a s t , d i d d i s h e s , made beds and Mother f i n i s h e d her tam. You know f i n i c k y hand s t i t c h i n g. T h i s e f f o r t p a i d o f f i n a l o v e l y way f o r me. As I came o u t s i de wearing my new tam to go back to town, young David h u r r i e d to the car ahead of me and I was wondering i f we were g o i n g to have a scene. ( He wasn't g o i n g t h i s t i m e l) I n s t e a d he opened the car door f o r me and asked me to get i n . Then the door was c a r e f u l l y shut. I f a i r l y f l o a t e d to Red Deer. At Grandma's house, t h i n g s were moving t o o . Grandpa ( Mr. H. Ahrens) spent Sunday morning copying my notes and d r a w i n g ' l i t t l e p i c t u r e s w h i l e Mom made h e r tam. She hadn't needed to make n o t e s , s i n c e I had them, so she thought. We were judged on g e n e r a l appearance, neatness and s e v e r a l other t h i n g s . I am p l e a s e d to say I r e c e i v e d A's on my " report card". Sunday we spent making a p i l l b o x or c l o c h e , whichever we wanted. We s t a r t e d out w i t h a y a r d of buckram and a y a r d of m a t e r i a l and made a hat. These were a l l t o be f i n i s h e d at home l a t e r on. Of the f o u r t e e n l a d i e s a t t e n d i n g t h i s course, some showed a l o t of o r i g i n a l i t y . I'm not as good at t h i s as I'd l i k e to be but I can borrow ideas from Grandma. You should see the hats she's made! I n c o n c l u s i o n I'm a w f u l l y happy I got i n v o l v e d w i t h HATS! F r i e d a Lawrence F o r S o c i a l S e r v i c e s , t h i s year we c o l l e c t e d a box of p r i nt m a t e r i a l p i e c e s which were sent to the Northern W. I.' s to be used i n making q u i l t s. C r o q u i n o l e S e r i e s : We h e l d t h i s s e r i e s of c r o q u i n o l e games on February 7, 21 and March 6. We s c u r r i e d around t h i s and surrounding d i s t r i c ts t o f i n d enough boards and as a r e s u l t , f i l l e d the Hub to c a p a c i t y w i t h youngsters. J u s t because some of the W. I. Dads took a r a t h e r dim view of a l l the n o i s e , t h i s c e r t a i n l y d i d n ' t dampen any young s p i r i t s . The youngest p l a y e r s hadn't s t a r t e d s c h o o l y e t! We kept a r e c o r d of winners and l o s e r s over the three games and gave p r i z e s to a l l w i n n e r s and l o s e r s at the end of each evening. Grand p r i z e winners were Mr. and Mrs. Underwood and c o n s o l a t i o n l i t t l e grands went to Susie B r o d i e , Doug Smith and Doug Brown who t i e d. T h i s was, I t h i n k , one of the best r e c e i v e d programs our W. I. has accomplished, at l e a s t as f a r as non W. I. people see i t . Submitted by F r i e d a Lawrence
