Well, among many things, she may rise in the Women's Institute, a similarly rural- oriented organization. One of the youngest to ever hoi d the office of WI constituency convener, Trudy Carson has assumed the duty for the Red Deer area. Her nomination, along with co- convener Florence Ruttan of Blackfalds, comes as the WI reflects on its own revitalization. " We have to get more women to help out with the important community tasks the WI has always been committed to," she said in her Red Deer home adding, " and we have to recruit many more younger women ( for WI)." Seen as her primary objective, the new convener recognizes that younger women are the means of perpetuating WI's long life in rural Alberta. At the same time, she said, the society must tell its story, the message being that the ladies just don't sit around sipping tea. " All the chapters," she went on, " have been involved in the socio- economic- education dimensions of their communities, a tradition of WI and one our members take seriously." Community service is instinctive for the CC who was raised on the Little Red Deer district farm of James and Livalle Edgar. She started school at John Wilson, Innisfail, a year after Little Red Deer School closed as a TRUDY CARSON consequence of consolidation. 4- H formed a big part of her childhood, being a member of the Innisfail Sew * N Sews ( of which her mother was co- leader) and later entered show competition in the Bow- Inn Pee Wee and 4- H Calf clubs. " I never won a prize," $ 1.00 she smiled, " but always entered competition, which is the object of the ( 4- H) exercise." Trudy was a junior leader in the Sew * N Sews and until recently kept and rode horses, for the fun of it, at the home place. Joining Dorcas ( Little Red Deer- Innisfail) WI in 1980, Mrs. Carson has consistently entered the regional WI spring handicraft shows while raising her children Leah, 11 1/ 2, and Cameron, 10, who also attended Innisfail County schools. WI has figured high in the CC's family traditions since great grandmother Mary Manuel was a charter member of the Little Red Deer Dorcas Society, a club that later became Dorcas WI. Trudy is the wife of Mitch Carson, the County of Red Deer fire chief. After Mitch's appointment, Jan. 1, 1988, the family moved from Innisfail to Red Deer where Trudy resumed her WI relationship with Balmoral. Mrs. Carson succeeded Mrs. Grace Grover of Blackfalds and will be assisted by co- convener Mrs. Florence Ruttan. r f HE WESTERNER EXPOSITION RED DEER, ALBERTA 60 EXHIBITOR'S TAG / 13c [ QUILT. - farCMMetK &.# o. uP £.££ QJ&.
