Constituency Conference of the
Alberta Women's Institute - Red
Deer Centre - was held at the Red
Deer and District Museum, April
30. Attending the day- long out­ing
was 33 women and guests.
Conveners Trudy Carson and
Florence Rutten presided, the
chair recognizing and welcoming
outgoing District 3 director Hazel
Swain sen; incoming District 3
director Grace Grover; and Little
Red Deer Dorcas WI member Li-valle
Edgar.
Minutes of the 1992 conference
were adopted as corrected. The
Penhold WI sent a letter stating
their intention to disband which
will leave this constituency with
seven branches.
It was announced that Don
Towers, editor of the Red Deer
County News, is this year's win­ner
of the Erland Lee award. Red
Deer Centre nominated Don for
the Canada- wide honor.
Florence was pleased to an­nounce
that Helen Farwell, of the
Blackfalds chapter had been
awarded the Governor General's
Commemorative Medal for the
125th anniversary of the Confed­eration
of Canada for significant
contributions to her community.
A short memorial was held for
four members who have passed
away since the 1992 conference.
Blackfalds member Carol Tron-nes
was the morning speaker, her
topic being the Leadership Work­shop
she recently attended at
Goldeye Camp. During lunch,
$ 33.51 was raised for Pennies for
Friendship. Sale of violets yielded
$ 28 for the AWI office fund.
Paul McGlone, director of vol­unteer
services and fundraising
at Red Deer Regional Hospital was
guest speaker in the afternoon.
The constituency has taken on the
project of making Unit 37- 38 more
home- like. Mr. McGlone gave us
an update on progress and showed
pertinent slides. So far we have
contributed home- made quilts and
afghans and teacups and saucers.
We had a special Cushion Compe­tition
added to our Handicraft
Display this year in which all 18
pillows entered were donated to
Unit 37- 38.
Evelyn Wadey reported on our
new Handicraft Display and Tea
as well as announcing winners of
the various events.
The constituency would like to

This was Trudy and Florence's
last conference as constituency
conveners since their three- year
term is up. The co- chairs thank
all the educational conveners who
supported them, especially Eve­lyn
Wadey ( handicrafts) and Judy
Hueppel she user ( home economics
and health), and secretary Helen
Williams.

Point WI. She is wished every
success in the next three years.

We are pleased to welcome CC
Helen Williams of Lacombe
Four Point WI who earlier suc­ceeded
Mrs. Trudy Carson of
Red Deer in the post. Blackfalds
member, Mrs. Grace Grover,
was CC before Trudy and from
1951- 1961 Elsie Woodrow served
in the position as the only previ­ous
member of Lacombe 4- Point
to hold this important regional job.
A true daughter of the prai­ries,
Helen was born at Lacombe
and received her education at
Birch Lake and Morningside
rural schools.
Married to Don Williams who
farmed many years in the
Delburne district, Helen has six
children and 11 grandchildren.
While raising her family Helen
was involved with Girl Guides and
Boy Scouts.
Along with her WI duties, Mrs.
Williams devotes a great deal of
time to Red Cross as an eldero-bics
instructor, Nursing Home
Auxiliary, co- editing Lacombe
Seniors' Newsletter and is a
1994 Lacombe Senior Games
volunteer.
She joined Lacombe 4- Point in
1982 and held all offices of that
branch before assuming her fresh
WI responsibilities in April, a job
that will keep her busy until 1996.
Her first official duty was in­troduction
of County News editor
Don Towers to the Provincial WI
Convention at Olds, in June. At
that time the editor was awarded
the national Erland Lee award for
non- member services to the aims
ofWI.
Mrs. Williams is deeply com­mitted
to the organization's inter­est
in public education, the envi­ronment,
rural child care, agricul­ture
in the classroom and the
improvement of rural quality of
life.
In addition to her household
duties, Helen, as an adult student,
enhanced her skills at Red Deer
College and was employed until
Vetiremenf as a legal secretary in
the Red Deer law firm of Lock-erby,
Barlow and Seward.
Getting around the branches a
great deal, Mrs. Williams has a

The election of Mrs. Williams
as constituency convener is an
endorsement of energy. The News
looks to this remarkable woman
for great WI things coming out of
Central Alberta where provincial
president- elect Doris Northey is
already displaying a similar home­grown
vivacity for what may be
Wfs new golden age.

The April Canvass netted $ 255
for the Cancer Fund. Play
Th anks expressed to those
members who assisted and at­tended
the Constituency Confer­ence.
Handicraft Competition Report
showed that Pine Lake WI entered
30 articles and gained 20 firsts
and 10 seconds, totalling 168
points for show second place stand­ing.
Five cushions were entered
in the Special Class and will go
with 13 other cushions to be pre­sented
to Unit 37 at the Regional
Hospital. Gayle Olson and Doris
Warke each had one outstanding
article.
Coffee Party lists and duties
were handed out.
In lieu of sending a delegate to
Provincial Convention, day visi­tors
will be attending and will
share voting privileges and mile­age
costs.
A " Group of Five" will be en­tered
in the Westerner Creative
Arts Handicraft Competition.

slides taking during the time that
she and Roy spent in China.
