Pine Lake Women's Institute

Schalin, Pine Lake, who
gave us an update on the
controversial Pine Lake
landfill issue. The Concerned
Citizen's of Pine
Lake will be attending a
hearing before the Development
Appeal Board to
appeal the permit to install
a synthetic liner in the cell
under construction.
Arrangements were
completed to attend Red
Deer W. I. Constituency
Conference in Red Deer,
judging day for handicraft
and the Handicraft Tea - all
of which will be held in the
Red Deer Museum and
Archives.
A committee will be
formed to work on ideas lur
the wall hanging competition,
depicting our community
history. This is for
F. W. I. C. level for the year
2000 convention to be held
in Brandon, Manitoba.
A committee was also
details of the annual Farmers
Market held at Pine
Lake beginning the long j
weekend in May.
A thank you letter was f
received from R. D. R. H. C.
Foundation lor our donation
to Unit 37 Palliative
Care. This donation was
used to help refurnish the
Family Room
Pine Lake W. I.
Ten members and one
guest attended the'May
meeting held in the Hub
Center. Arrangements were
completed for the annual
Coffee Party which was
held on June 3.
Educational convener

Pine Lake W. I. had one
hundred per cent participation
in the Red Deer Constituency
Handicraft competition
and that we had
captured second placing.

on the outstanding table.

Communication is the key to world understanding. Such was
the opportunity afforded delegates who attended the
Associated Country Women of the World 22nd Triennial
Conference in Pretoria, South Africa. Friday, April 3, was set
aside to hear speakers, then discuss Shaping our
Environment, Youth, Ideals and Resources as it pertained to
the theme ' Shaping Tomorrow's World'.
Ms. Bonje Njobe addressed Shaping our Environment,
both social and physical. The following recommendation was
presented Legislation should be introduced in the criminal
law of all countries against sexual harassment, be it physical or
mental The women expressed concern about pollution and
the degradation of air. water and land but felt that women can
lead the way Education begins in the home!
Shaping our YouthUas exemplified by Dr. David Molapo. a
young black African who had been influenced and supported
by his mother At age fifteen, he started the I CAN Foundation
that focuses on youth. 54.4% of South Africans are under
age 21: 1/ 2 of them women.
I CAN stresses Insight. Commitment, Accountability and
Never give up.
In Shaping our ideals. Dr. Brenda Olivier stated the
importance of a visionary goal achieved by removing barriers,
one at a lime. She stated " The poor will save Africa. The
• women of Africa will save the world!"
\ nShaping our Resources Dr. Ellen Kornegay said. " Start
where you're at. Use what you have. Each one teach
one." This recommendation was ratified . B e it recommended
that the ACWW urge it s member societies to follow up and be
involved in the United Nations Agenda 21 as ratified by the
180 countries following the Rio De Janeiro Conference in
1992 We, as women, can make this happen1 ~ i
