^ o m e n ' s ^ 1909 1994 OfCourseYouCan!! by Marilee Kosik, District 2 Director Our wonderful organization. Alberta Women's Institutes, is heading for trouble and it needs your help! Here in District 2, we saw an example when no one stepped forward last February I to serve as Director. Since last summer, there has been a call out for memhers to let their name I stand as Provincial Membership Coordinator. Constituencies tell me of difficulty in finding conveners, and many who are serving are ' recycled'. How can any organization survive without leaders? My Granny used to say that, " A ship will soon founder if there is no one at the wheel". In serious danger too, I would think, is the ship where no one tends the engines, charts the course, or fuels the tanks. Ladies, we have enjoyed the luxury of being passengers on the " Good Ship AWI", piloted by capable and enthusiastic leaders, but we must now be prepared to take our 1 turn at the wheel. \ I hear ( he murmurs ... i " I don't have the experience" . . . " There are others to do it" . . . " I haven't the time"... " I'm too old" ... " I have children "... "/ couldn V possibly"... Look around you. Trie women who are holding office are not independently wealthy, single, unemployed, university- educated twenty- five year olds. They have families, homes, jobs, responsibilities and. yes, the same insecurities as the rest of us. So how are they different from those who " couldn't possibly". When they were asked, instead of thinking of all the negatives ( the " couldn't possibly's"), they looked at the value of Women's Institutes to themselves and others, recognized their duty to take a turn at the helm, and felt confident that AWI would offer the help, guidance and support needed to fill the role. And they answered ... " OF COURSE I CAN!!" So, please, starting now, plan to take office. If you have never held an executive position, consider serving at Branch level to gain experience. Once you have served your Branch, then move up to Constituency, District and Provincial level. " OF COURSE YOU CAN!!" Talk to the people who hold these positions. We will tell you that we had the same doubts and reservations. ( Can I do it? Do I have the time?, etc.) We will also tell you about the warm support of every member, the help and guidance of all past and present executive, and the satisfaction of taking our turn. Can we help AWI grow and prosper? OF COURSE WE CAN!! Can each of you take a bigger role? OF COURSE YOU CAN!! Can I convince you to step forward? OF COURSE 1 CAN!! At least, I'm sure going to try. Women's Institute - An Opportunity For The90' s by Doris Northey. Presidenl- Elect " Lifegives us season without end, hut life's nicest gift is a special friend." The year of 1994 offers each one of us the opportunity to face new goals and challenges. It is also the " Year of the Family" and gives us the chance to fulfill our motto " For Home & Country"! Our organization offers the opportunity to become friends of new families, locally, nationally and internationally through our network. Many of you have shown loving care in your activities with the young and the aged. Branch reports reveal many dollars arc being raised, and your community is being well served through the many projects that you support. However, we must give to our own organization, the Women's Institute, at all levels - AWI, FWIC and ACWW - if we are going to fulfill our future goals and projects. " Bob the Beaver" is just the beginning. There will be less funding from outside agencies available to Elizabeth Rushton pre Past President's Pin. AWI Past Presidents with World President, Valerie Fisher and AWI President Elect, Doris Northey
