Pine Lake - Isabelle Beck Annie Allen celebrated her 93rd birthday, Nov. 11. Fourteen members wished her happiness and good health and then sang Happy Birthday to her. Lillie Clutton presented a program on handicraft. She showed Christmas cards made from burlap and felt. She also showed Christmas tree ornaments, hang- ' ing mobiles, and other colorful items made from felt. She offered ! patterns to the members for all of the handicrafts shown. Edna ' Whittimore reported on International Literacy Year. It is sponsored by the Further Education Council of the County of Red Deer. Anyone who requires tutoring in basic reading and writing skills may call the Innisfail Library at 227- 4407. Volunteer tutors are needed and special training is not required. Pine Lake - Isabelle Beck The 70th Anniversary of the Red Deer Centre Women's Institute Constituency in the Penhold Memorial Hall was attended by several Pine Lake WI members. Marion Brown, in nurse's uniform took part in a pageant entitled The Hour Has 70 Years. She symbolized the 1939 Alberta WI fundraising drive to buy radium for U. of A cancer treatment. Kathleen Lawrence summarized 70 years of WI handicraft; and Lillie Clutton photographed the event. There will be a public education seminar In Our Backyard, Friday, Nov. 23,7: 30- 9: 30 p. m. and on Saturday, Nov. 24, 1- 5 p. m. It will address the question of hazardous or special wastes and what is Alberta's solution? What can individuals do to be part of the solution? The Jelly and Bake Sale will take place Friday, Nov. 2 at the Parkland Mall in Red Deer. WI Christmas supper will be held for members, husbands and families at 6: 30 p. m., Dec. 7 at the Centre. International Affairs convenor, Kathleen Lawrence presented the taped speech given by Stephen Lewis at the July 1989 Canadian Home Economics Association Conference in Winnipeg. Mr. Lewis was impressed with the common- sense approach to problems, saying non- governmental organizations often approach a problem with more common sense than official agencies.
