ALBERTA WOMEN'S INSTITUTES NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 1987. The scene has been set and you as members are the players. Your a t t i t u d e and your actions are what makes our organization. In order to make our programs work, communications are most important. So t h i s newsletter comes as an " h e l l o " and to inform you of so many e x c i t i n g plans for 1988. 1. The Vice President's p o s i t i o n on the Federated Women's I n s t i t u t e s of Canada Executive Board i s open. Bette Ballhorn's term w i l l be up i n June 1988. ANY MEMBER of A l b e r t a Women's I n s t i t u t e s may submit her name f o r t h i s p o s i t i o n. It must be sent into the P r o v i n c i a l o f f i c e by NOVEMBER 15, 1987. This i s a three year term. If you wish any f u r t h e r information - contact the P r o v i n c i a l o f f i c e - 469 - 1254. 2. Plans are being f i n a l i z e d for the Federated Women's I n s t i t u t e s of Canada Convention in 1988. Alberta w i l l be allowed 10 v o t i n g delegates, plus 3 on the Federated Board, plus 20 non- voting delegates. 3. Information on a pre and post convention tour i n i n the planning stage and w i l l be sent out as soon as we :* now the d e t a i l s. 4. Projects: a. Violence i n the Family b. A g r i c u l t u r e i n the Classroom c. Farm Safety d. Leadership Workshops e. Membership and P u b l i c i t y f. R u r a l Environment g. Agriculture ( Conservation- projects- programs) Each member of the A. W. I. Council i s going to be working on increased membership and with the Branch members' help we w i l l make our o r g a n i z a t i o n grow! 5. The C o r n e l i a Wood Leadership Scholarship - See F a l l Home & Country. The newly started scholarship to the Rural Education and Development A s s o c i a t i on Workshop i s open to any member of A l b e r t a Women's I n s t i t u t e s . Deadline i s Nov 15 each year. C r i t e r i a : To be awarded to a f i r s t time applicant i n L e v e l one or two of the REDA Workshop. The s c h o l a r s h i p to pay f o r : R e g i s t r a t i o n , room and board, and mileage to a maximum of § 400.00. Q u a l i f i c a t i o n s : The extent the r e c i p i e n t w i l l benefit the A. W. I, and/ or the extent the recipient w i l l benefit the community. The recipient w i l l be chosen by the Executive of A. W. I. Further * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** A. W. I, w i l l also pay one r e g i s t r a t i o n only, i n any l e v e l 1,2, or3. Q u a l i f i c a t i o n s as above. 6. It seems that gremlins got into the p r i n t e d m a t e r i a l f o r the F a l l Home & Country so we do apologise for the errors and ommissions. Please disregard the items at the bottom of the Handicraft l i s t s , they are a r e p r i n t . The q u i l t competition i s over. 7. The Bread Fund for F. W. I. C. continues - cost of a l o a f of Bread per member please. to be f i n i s h e d i n 1988.- Send to P r o v i n c i a l O f f i c e. 8. The Bread Fund for ACWW continues for 1988 and 1989 - cost of a l o a f of bread per member per year. 9. We are committed to e s t a b l i s h a fund to a s s i s t an ACWW member from an economically deprived country to attend the ACWW Conference i n Kansas c i t y i n 1989. This was a motion passed at the 1987 A. W. I. Convention. We looked most s e r i o u s l y at our Budget and know that we must be most c a r e f u l with our expenditures. So w i t h both these things i n mind, we want you to p l a n on donating a r t i c l e s f o r an Handicraft Sales Table at our 1988 A. W. I. Convention in Olds. Funds from t h i s s a l e w i l l go to support this project. COOP NEWS A new voluntary code, prepared by the Canadian A s s o c i a t i o n of Broadcasters, w i ll attempt to c o n t r o l violence on TV. 1. programs with v i o l e n c e - to be shown l a t e at night. 2. The d e p i c t i n g of v i o l e n c e against women, abuse, sexual, or other w i l l be monitered. 3. To excersize caution i n the depicting of v i o l e n t a c t i o n i n a l l children's shows - i n c l u d i n g cartoons. Let us know of your special events and a n n i v e r s a r i e s. Although we have a busy year planned " Take time to smell the roses," Keep smiling Alberta Women's I n s t i t u t e s President.
