We have had a busy fall with the many Women's Institute Celebrations: the 85th Anniversary Celebration of the Stony Plain Branch and the 65th Anniversary Celebration of the Leslieville Branch. Both activities I had the pleasure of attending. It was also a delight to attend the 60th Wedding Anniversary of Kay and George McMillan. Kay was the AWI Secretary- Treasurer for many years, and George has been a tireless volunteer for AWI activities too. Many more of you will have had celebrations, so we hope that they were everything that you could wish for. We also have welcome news that we have a new branch at Youngstown It is Prairie Rose Branch c/ o Margaret Twa Box 278 Youngstown, Alberta T0J3P0 Thank everyone for contributing to the office fund. We appreciate and gratefully acknowledge your support. This issue of Home and Country is full, so therefore the Memorial Donations will be included in the next issue of Home and Country. Do not forget that we will be marking the 90* Anniversary of AWI at the June Conventioa Convention dates are Jane 9 and 10 at Olds College, Olds, Alberta. Because this is a very special occasion, we want everyone to have a place and an information package. Therefore, we will again be asking for your help and cooperation by Registering in Advance. Details will follow in the next mail- out. Although the month of October 1998 has passed, we do not want to forget that it was Women's History Month. This designation rerninds us all of the contribution the Famous Five made to the advancement of women in society. Led by Emily Murphy, the first female magistrate in the British Commonwealth, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Edwards, challenged the Supreme Court of Canada to assert that women were persons. The women lost. They then appealed to the British Privy Council The Council described the exclusion of women as " a relic of days more barbarous than ours" and overturned the Canadian decision. On October 18,1929, Canadian Women became " persons."
