NEW YEAR'S GREETINGS FROM THE DESK OF KATHRYN HABBERFIELD PRESIDENT ALBERTA WOMEN'S INSTITUTES DEAR MEMBERS, NEW EXECUTIVE MEMBERS, NEW IDEAS, NEW GOALS - ALL BEGIN WITH THE NEW / EAR. r I do hope that at your annual meeting, you observed, in your branch, the idea that an executive position should only be held by one person for three years. Others must have the opportunity, and take the responsibility of f i l l i n g the positions. Best wishes to all who have taken the challenge of holding a position. You will gain so much by the experience. Those of you who have stepped down, please help your successor. For instance, new secretaries, do you know that branch reports are sent every month to: 1. Your constituency convener 2. the 1st Vice President of A. W. I. ( Beryl Ballhorn 123 Green Ash Dr. Wetaskiwin AB. T9A 2H7.) Farm Safety has been a priority project with A. W. I, for some years now. I was saddened to hear of the death of two A. W. I, members' husbands this fall from Farm Accidents. ( Husbands of Dorothy Sanford and Basilia Henninger). Let us all work towards having families attend Farm Safety Workshops. These workshops can be arranged simply by a telephone call to Dorothy Williams 556 - 3751 and reserving you local hall. If you require funds to rent the hall apply to A. W. I, provincial office. A Farm Safety Grant which we received, goes towards covering some of the costs. The A. W. I, project of a library for " Little Buffalo" W, I. is going ahead well, thanks to the dedication of Marie Plaizier. I hope to attend a ceremony for the ribbon cutting and opening of this library. A Library Arts program is being taught to native women who will act as librarians. Of course, more books are always welcome. Biographies, children's books and the classics are especially needed. We have had some welcome assistance from the Native Secretariat with this project. Please have your resolutions ready for District Conferences. Shirleyan Hammer, our Resolutions Chairman, needs them by March 15, 1986. Since many of us are going to A. C. W. W. Conference in Ireland in May, we have to have everything ready a bit earlier this year. I hope to see you at District Conference. I plan to attend all of them this year. District 1 Conference was an excellent conference, held in October 1985, but a poor crowd due to weather conditions. A suggestion would be to arrange to charter a bus to pick you up, take you to the conference, and be there to take you home. It probably would not cost as much as individual cars, and you woul'd not have the worry of driving. Look into the possibility. Remember that A. W. I, pays expenses for one delegate per branch, so that would help. Happy New Year Sincerely, Kathryn Habberfield. P. S. Aren't you proud of the two A. W. I, members whose pictures are in the Farm Safety Calendar. I A!* !
