PRESIDENT'S NEWSLETTER FALL 1992
GREETINGS TO ALL ALBERTA WOMEN'S INSTITUTES MEMBERS
THANK YOU to e v e r y branch for r e t u r n i n g the " yellow" sheets of the survey
regarding where to make cuts i n the A. W. I. I did especially appreciate the
extra little comments that were made on some. You gave the Council a lot to
think about. RESULTS? The majority l i k e i t j u s t as i t i s BUT i f it
can't be that way i t would be a very close draw between having a District
Workshop every year, because more members attend, to a Provincial Convention
every year i n order to keep a strong and informed organization.
Council is pleased to say that for t h i s year we can continue as before.
WHY?
One reason is for the f i r s t time in many years the convention paid f or
itself. This i s due to corporate sponsors and a shortened convention. We
have had as much as $ 5000.00 to $ 6000.00 deficit in the past f or
conventions. Council also worked on a very s t r i c t budget and were able to
keep within its limits. I thank everyone for their co- operation to thus
end. Our major concern this year for f u t u r e financing is the drop in the
i n t e r e s t rates on our investments. So PLEASE keep up or increase your
donations to the Office Fund. Our Government grant has also beer: cut
again.
Our Provincial Educational Conveners have as their priorities this year,
ENVIRONMENT: Continue looking at the water sources in your area. Ke
hope to put together a presentation with all the information Eunice Horte
has collected and get i t to the branches. I would also like to mention a
most thought provoking paper presented at the ACWW Conference in the Hague
on " Population and the Environment". It would be an excellent discussion
paper, and i s available from the office.
EDUCATION: Continue with the study on the Family. The P r o v i n c i al
Convener has sent out some excellent information. The Council of A. W. I,
will be looking at what we can do f o r the 1994 Year of the Family.
AGRICULTURE: Our new Provincial Convener, Mary Jane Davies would
like you to take a look at the commodity groups that are pertinent to your
area, such as Egg Producers, Milk Producers, etc. For CANADIAN INDUSTRIES,
have a local entrepreneur come and speak on their industry.
HEALTH, HOME ECONOMICS AND SOCIAL SERVICES: Continue to have a closer look
at the menopause issue. Vera Brown would also like the members to discuss
the ever increasing child sexual assaults and murders. What can we as a
society do t o .? top t h i s ? Stiff er penalties? Forward your suggestions to
Vera. Addresses of a l l Prov Educational Conveners are in home £• Country,
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS: Study other countries, we may not be able to t r a v e l
to them but i f we go to the local l i b r a r y we can t r a v e l via books.
A warm welcome to the Provincial Handicraft Convener: Beryl Ward.
A MOTION was made at the 1992 P r o v i n c i a l Convention that A. W. I. Council set
a consistant and realistic mileage rate for all officers of A. W. I. The
motion made at the September Council meeting reads as follows:
" The mileage rate for all A. W. I, officers be set between 10c km/ 15c mile
and 16ckm/ 25c mile."
ANOTHER MOTION presented at the 1992 P r o v i n c i a l Convention asked the Council
to put into action the start of a suppliment to the A g r i c u l t u r e History Book
