ALBERTA WOMEN'S INSTITUTES PRESIDENT'S NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 1990 MEMBERS OF ALBERTA WOMEN'S INSTITUTES I t i s t r u l y my pleasure to b r i n g greetings from the C o u n c i l , the Executive Secretary and myself of t he A l b e r t a Women's I n s t i t u t e s t o each of you. We have j u s t completed out f i r s t Council meeting and the general f e e l i n g i s that a l o t of business has been taken care of on your behalf. The C o u n c i l i s an energetic, keen group, so, we are c o n f i d e n t that we can accomplish our g o a l s i n the next three years. At the Convention I e x p l a i n e d t h a t Communication i s the t o p p r i o r i t y w i t h in our o r g a n i z a t i o n , and i n other areas. A committee has been appointed to look a t ways t o p u b l i c i z e and promote our o r g a n z i a t i o n . Our P o l i c y Book i s being r e v i s ed and our A. W. I, h i s t o r y brought up t o date. We are l o o k i n g a t ways o f r a i s i n g the p r o f i l e of Women's I n s t i t u t e s in D i s t r i c t 1 and have received support and encouragement frcm the D i s t r i c t Home Economists i n t h a t area. We have had d i f f i c u l t y gaining access to the Government Departments to present our Resolutions but have met w i t h two Cabinet M i n i s t e r s d e a l i n g w i t h the Premier's Copuncil i n Support of A l b e r t a Families and discussed with the S o l i c i t o r General about Family/ Wife Abuse. We a n t i c i p a t e meeting with the A g r i c u l t u r e Caucus i n the near f u t u r e. Our P r o v i n c i a l Educational Conveners have s e t t h e i r p r i o r i t i e s for the year. The Constituency Educational Conveners can expect communication frcm their counterparts s h o r t l y , f i l l i n g them i n on the d e t a i l s . In b r i e f they are: Environment - Water Systems P o l l u t i o n and D i v e r s i o n A g r i c u l t u r e - A g r i c u l t u r e i n the Classroom I n t e r n a t i o n a l A f f a i r s - United Nations Education - Family L i fe Health - Aids - r e l a t i n g back to the two r e s o l u t i o n s passed at the P r o v i n c i a l Convention REMEMBER: You are not compelled t o study a l l o f these, they are suggestions, perhaps your branch wants t o p i c k j u s t one t o p i c per year. We are a l s o involved i n a new h e a l t h program. H. E. L. P. HEALTH EDUCATION LEARNING PROJECT " Surgery - A N e c e s s i t y or Your Choice" You w i l l hear more about t h i s from your D i s t r i c t Director and Constituency Convener. Each year we have two b u r s a r i e s t h a t are presented, so t h a t , two attend Leadership Workshops presented by Rural Educaton and A s s o c i a t i o n ( R. E. D. A.) This year both w i l l be h e l d at Goldeye Camp 1. The C o r n e l i a Wood Bursary: R. E. D. A. L e v e l 1. A v a i l a b l e to any A l b e r t a Women's I n s t i t u t e s member who has not p r e v i o u s ly attended a R. E. D. A. Leadership Workshop. R e g i s t r a t i o n , accomodation, t r a v e l w i ll be paid up t o the amount of $ 400.00. 2. The A. W. I, w i l l present $ 150.00 t o a member wishing t o attend the R. E. D. A. Level 2 Workshop. members can Development
