WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Submitted by E. Marion Brown Blanche Cunningham, Alberta Women's Institutes District 5 Director related her experiences of attending her first Federated Women's Institutes of Canada conference in Lennoxville. Quebec June 24- 29/ 03 at the Cottonwood Hall. Her captive audience incl uded members from the Olds- Sundre and Innisfail C o n s t i t u e n c i e s - Cottonwood. Gordon, Little Red Deer Dorcas, Mary Riley, Eagle Valley -'' and Coburn as well as four members of the Pine Lake Women's Institute. Supported by attractively mounted photos and convention artifacts, Ms. Cunningham expressed her thrill of flying across our well defined " patch work quilted" prairies to the forests and lakes and the mighty St. Lawrence of our eastern neighbours. And neighbours and friends we were as we participated in the 16th National Convention with the theme. Participation + Communication = Achievement, A Formula for Success. Keynote speakers were: Ann Medina, C B C broadcast journalist; Ashton Sewlal, motivational speaker; Elizabeth Rushton, A C W W Area Pres. for Canada; Rev. Canon Heather Thomson, Bishop's University; and Sharon McCully, Editor of the Sherbrooke Record. Workshop leaders included: Liliana Padula and Line Guiguere, Brother International Corporation; Genevieve Claver and Rox- Ann Duchesne, students of Champlain College who spent six weeks working in Peru; Dennis Beaudet, Bishop's computer specialist; Tom Fletcher, assistant professor of environmental studies; Julia Annette of the Ontario ROSE program; and Phyllis Kosik , Alberta AW1 President Elect presenting Communicate with Confidence. Quebec hosted a series of entertainment of Irish Dancing. Blue Grass and Old Time Music, Barbershop, Singer Karen McKenna, doggers, step dancers and outstanding fiddle players. Quebec Day took all delegates and visitors on a tour of the Sherbrooke area and south to the U. S. border. The day included visits to historic schools, churches, museums and monasteries; renowned border opera house/ library, wineries and factories ending with a typical Quebec dinner at a " sugar shack" near Granby, Quebec complete with maple sugar on snow! Alberta is continuing to be twinned with Newfoundland and Labrador. As the two provinces met. President Mildred Luz of Alberta personally presented President Joan MacNeill of Newfoundland and Labrador with a monetary donation for Badger, Newfoundland - Twinning in Action! 234 registered as full time delegates with 19 from Alberta. Numbers soared to almost 400 as day time visitors registered. Awards were presented for a variety of competitions and Roy Brown was again honoured as the only " Erland Lee" Award recipient present. Displays were completed for all educational studies and Marion Brown displayed her C E L E B R A TE C A N A D A interactive project board. The Alberta display board invited " Canada" to come to Alberta in 2006 where the next Federated Convention will be held. Congratulations to now FWIC Past President Faye MaybeiTy, her Board and the Conference Committee for such a successful event. Blanche Cunningham concluded the afternoon presentation by reviewing the three highlights of her trip to the Quebec conference: 1) Viewing the mighty St. Lawrence River 2) Visiting the Notre Dame Basilique in Montreal 3) Joining hands with women across the nation and singing, " This Land is Our Land" Faye Mayberry Presents Roy Brown with Erland Lee Certificate Marion Brown meets Twillingate Twin Dianne Vatcher
