Roy L. Brown brought honour to the Pine Lake
Branch when he was awarded the Erland Lee Appreciation
Award at the annual Provincial
Women's Institutes Convention held in Camrose
June 3, 4, and 5, 2003.
This award is presented by the Federated
Women's Institutes of Canada to a man who exemplifies
those qualities of Erland Lee who was instrumental
in the founding of the Women's Institutes
organization. Each province is eligible to
nominate a recipient who will again be honoured
at the Federated Convention in Lennoxville, Quebec,
June 24 to 28, 2003, Roy will be accompanying
his wife, Marion, who is serving as Federated
Executive Office for the province of Alberta to the
triennial meeting.
Marion Brown also received a certificate of appreciation
for her work as secretary, press reporter
and monthly reports to the AW1 executive.
The annual convention was attended by three
members of the Pine Lake W. I. Doris Warke gave a
full report, highlighting the addresses of the key
speakers: Lorea Ladner, Ashton Sewlai and Barry
Knapp who spoke on the Leduc Food Processing
Development Centre in Leduc, the meaning behind
Helping Hands and STARS respectively. It
was a privilege to have ACWW Area President Elizabeth
Rushton and FWIC President Faye Mayberry
address the assembly. Maxine Brigley will become
the new editor for the provincial newsletter,
Home & Country. The branch displayed its " Lorgot"
bird feeder and proceeded to finalize the raffle
tickets for drawing November 1, 2003, at the
annual Hub Race Nite. Tickets will be available
from any W. I. member.
Branch Health Convener, Millie Munro, presented
a paper on Music Therapy. Music stimulates
wellness giving greater enjoyment to one's life.
Music promotes healing by activating the brain.
This can be achieved by listening or actively
" making music." It is thought the music of Mozart
is especially soothing to unborn infants and their
mothers as well as children in their formative
years. Millie Munro thought the selection, Power
of Song, sung by the Pine Lake Singers exemplified
her topic.
Mrs. Munro also warned the members about
the careful use of DEET in this year of the threat
of the West Nile virus. Marion Brown contributed
a " Mosquito Remedy." Mosquitoes will be attracted
to a white dinner plate of water and a few
drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dish detergent, which
will kill the mosquitoes and make for a more
pleasant outdoor experience. SARS is also in the
forefront, a concern for travellers and those in areas
of outbreaks.
The annual Coffee Party was held Wednesday,
May 26, 2003. Although the attendance was
down, coffee goers enjoyed muffins, coffee cake
and jam. Plants and baking were available as well
as table centre pieces. The door prize of a Mich-ener
Centre Cookbook was won by Linda Holt.
The W. I. Corner has again been planted with
flowers to make our community more attractive.
Kathleen Lawrence donated a lap robe and blanket
to the Red Deer Women's Shelter who expressed
their appreciation for the useful and attractive
gift.
The branch plans for an August outing before
the regular monthly meetings resume in September.
Pea butter developed in the Leduc Food Processing
plant was sampled by the members as
they enjoyed refreshments at the close of their
meeting.
