Pine Lake W. l. news
Decked out in green nine members met at the home of E.
Marion Brown for the regular monthly meeting. The theme
for the March gathering was, " Keep an open mind but be careful
what you let in". Think Green roll call produced timely
environmental hints and members' traditions of marking St.
Patrick's Day.
Due lo a lengthy meeting, the International Affairs program
was postponed but Marion Brown asked members to identify
various souvenirs in her living room that the Browns had
acquired from nineteen provinces and world countries.
Marilyn Wattenbarger was the winner.
The annual Heart Fund card party had been a success with
community neighbours enjoying a social evening along with
contributing $ 257.00 lo the heart fund.
Gifts in kind to the value of approximately $ 75.00 were
donated to the Red Deer Homeless via Shining Mountains
Living Community Services.
Detailed plans were finalized for . the District III Workshop
at Alix, March 30, 2006; Constituency Handicraft Tea April
29, 2006; Pine Lake W. I. 50th Anniversary celebration April
15, 2006.

Women's Institute
The focus of the 50l anniversary
meeting of the Pine Lake Women's
Institute was the Phil" opines
presented by Branch International
Convener, Marion Brown. The
Philippines was the destination for
280 wheel chairs from Central
Alberta Rotary Clubs. Small gifts of
pencils, balls and small toys were
first given to exuberant children in
various towns and villages. The gifts
of wheel chairs seemed to
overwhelm recipients w i t h joy. The
country comprised of over 7,100
islands w i t h a dense population of
84,000,0000 experiences extreme
poverty under a c r u s h i n g debt.
Even under such harsh conditions,
the F i l i p i n o spirit w i l l survive by
their generous and hospitable nature
and outside help.
Marion Brown also informed the
meeting of the A C W W project.
" K i m a k o " World women will
support this Tanzanian project to
promote health and education for
c h i l d survival.
Four members had attended the
District III Workshop in Alix on
March 30. Cheryl Howell told of
receiving life saving islets from a
donor pancreas w h i c h were injected
into her liver. Her body produces its
own insulin although anti rejection
drugs w i l l have to be taken life long.
Another islet transplant may be
necessary i n the future.
The keynote speaker of the Kneehill
Constituency Conference was
Lindsay Parker. As a fifteen year o ld
student she had traveled with a
student group to the Antarctic.
She supported her presentation with
slides and emphasized the need to
keep the region i n its pristine state.
In addition M a r i o n Brown and Doris
Warke enjoyed the outstanding
display of handicraft, baking,
photography and plants and W. I.
hospitality.
F i n a l preparations were made for the
upcoming 5 0 t n Anniversary branch
celebration and Constituency
handicraft tea.
The branch will again sponsor the
children's garden club.
