Pine Lake W. l. branch had several activities during the summer months Three members attended the Hillsdown Tea in June. Fifteen of the 17 children's gardens had been completed, judged and awarded blue and white ribbon bearing the Alberta rose. A picture of the garden accompanied the judging sheet and was presented at the " garden party" windup held at the Hub Community Centre The summer outing in August included a picnic lunch at the home of Marilyn Wattenbarger, tour of the Cooege- Side Bethany Care Centre and the Sports Hall of Fame in Red Deer Several members volunteered their time and help at the annual August Ag Fari. The second annual Christmas Market sponsored by the Pine Lake W. i. will be held Saturday. November 27, 2004 at the Hub Community Centre between 11: 00 a. m. - 3: 00 p. m. Tables are available by called 403.886.4108 Agriculture was highlighted by Convener Faye Nicholson at the October Marion Brown will speak on the Afghan election. Doris Warke had visited Hillsdown W. l. and these members have consented to assisting the Pine Lake W. l. in the quilt assembly for Alberta Women's Institutes. The annual Christmas Market will be held Saturday. November 27th at the HUB Community Centre. Tables are being rented at $ 15.00. A noon meal will be available with one complimentary meal ticket to each table vendor. The Jelly Project will go ahead with the limited juice available. A basket of jelly will be donated to the HUB Race Nite. The annual Christmas Family Supper will be held Friday, December 3, 2004 at the HUB Community Centre. The evening will take the form of a pot luck supper with the turkey being provided by the Pine Lake W. I. In recognition of the International Year of Rice and World Food Day. the October meeting began with members enjoying a meal of " rice" dishes. Pine Lake Women's Institute Submitted by E. M A R I O N BROWN meeting. The leading problem in our Canadian society is the BSE problem with the discovery of the first case on May 20. 2003. Auctions, which were halted, have still not resumed their normal operations. Retail of beef has been down even with the strong support shown by the general population. For farmers anti depressants are up. It is recognized there must be an increase in meat packing facilities. Scientists are working on a break though in BSE testing that can be accurate and timely. As for disposal of carcasses, the " digester" process operates more cheaply and breaks down the prions making them harmless. Elk and sheep farmers have also been affected by BSE problem and chronic wasting disease. 19 million chickens had to be slaughtered affecting 25 farms because of the Avian Flu. Farmers are also concerned about the environment and the expansion of industry such as coal bed methane on their agricultural lands. One final item of good news expressed by Ms. Nicholson was that honeybees can be trained to find land mines. Sugar is mixed with explosives and the bees zoom in on mine locations recognizing this odor. Plans were made for a busy fall of activities. Kathleen Lawrence will be the official delegate to the Red Deer Constituency Conference Saturday, October 16. 2004 at the Red Deer Museum.
