P i n e L a k e W o m e n ' s I n s t i t u t e c e l e b r a t e s i t ' s submitted by E. Marion Brown, Secretary Pine Lake W. I. On April 17, 1956 the Pine Lake Women's Institute was formed at the home of E. Marion Brown. Fifty years later present members hosted an afternoon celebration at the HUB Community Centre to mark this important event. Approximately seventy men, women and children attended. Surrounded by displays, mounted table pictures, balloons and flowers, members' husbands and families, AWI representatives,, past members and constituency friends enjoyed an afternoon of reminiscing, music, good food and fellowship. AWI President, Phyllis Kosik and AWI Vice President, Darlene Wicks and District Director, Gloria Coates brought provincial and district greetings respectively President Kosik presented PLWI President Marilyn Wattenbarger with the branch 50th Anniversary Certificate as well as presenting each of the ten present members with PLWI name tags bearing the AWI pin. Sandra Pierce representing the HUB Community Centre presented a certificate acknowledging the Fifty years of service to the Pine Lake Community. Marion Brown briefly reviewed the branch history acknowledging the present charter members of Marion Brown. Ella Sawyer, Doris Warke and past charter member Frieda Bragg. From the first meeting with nine members joining the organization, membership grew to a maximum of 22 members in the late 1970s. Over the years sixty- five women have contributed to the branch. Kathleen Lawrence conducted a memorial to the seventeen branch members who have passed away. Branch Life Members, Kathleen Lawrence and Millie Munro were presented to the gathering. A l l members of the Pine Lake Women's Institute have shared the branch executive positions and educational chairmanships. Kathleen Lawrence, Marion Brown, Doris Warke and Marilyn Wattenbarger have served as Constituency Conveners at the next organizational level. Several branch members have served as Provincial Educational Chairmen and Marion Brown has completed one three year term on the Federated Women's Institute of Canada board as Executive Officer for Alberta. She also completed the 2000- 2003 history for the National Organization. The conferences for the world organization for women. Associated Women of the World, have been attended by various members and one husband, Roy Brown. In 2003. Roy Brown received the Erland Lee Award for outstanding contribution and support to Women's Institutes. Women's Institutes indeed opens the door to the world. World friendships have developed by pen friends and travel. By strengthening the home, the community is strengthened. The members of the Pine Lake Women's Institute have indeed lived up to their motto. " For Home and Country" for these fifty wonderful years. A special thank you is extended to Jackie Clutton who played the piano, to Zak Nicholson on the trumpet and Zak Brabbins on the violin, to Ashley Wattenbarger on the guitar and to Ron Underwood who brought the program to a close with his vocals and his guitar. The anniversary cake made by Sandra and Percy Pierce was cut by Teressa Greening. Beverly Cardinal recorded the events with her camera. Thanks to those who helped financially for the celebration, go to the Family of the Late Vera Pierce, Marion Brown and Martha Mosher. Frieda Bragg surprised Marion Brown with a bouquet of beautiful vibrant roses to express her appreciation for Marion's dedication and work over the years.
