WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
PINE L A K E WOMEN'S
INSTITUTE
The ladies have been
very busy during the first
quarter of the year 2000.
We have changed the program
to have only two educational
convenor reports
at each meeting so that
there can be a more comprehensive
report on different
subjects.
The Heart Fund Card
Party held at the Pine Lake
Hub Centre on February 26
obtained donations totaling
$ 330 for the Heart &
Stroke Association. Everyone
enjoyed playing cards
and fellowship afterwards
over coffee and lunch.
Three members attended
the District III workshop
held at Ponoka on March 9,
2000, in the Legion Hall.
The second portion of the
FWIC Literacy program
was introduced. Each
branch is encouraged to
find a way to help those in
their own community who
have problems with the
written word in this technical
world we live in. Members
learned the responsibilities
and duties for
branch, district and provincial
levels of WI. Entertainment
was the Bell
Ringers from Ponoka.
Our February meeting
started with a potluck supper.
As usual, our members
supplied various dishes for
a delightful meal. The
Constituency Convenor,
Marilyn Wattenbarger, was
the special guest for the
evening. She spoke on
" Between Dreams" as presented
to the AWI conference
at Olds last June. WI
has got to find the glue in
our global telecommunication
world to bind our
branches together. We
have to find a purpose for
WI to continue to exist.
Our former members left
us with a wonderful legacy;
we must continue to grow
and flourish or perish.

On March 1, Doris presented
a quilted cushion
top course to members of
WI and ladies of the community.
There were seven
ladies in attendance and
everyone learned lots and
appreciated Doris's work
for the course. In fact,
everyone enjoyed themselves
so much, there will
be another similar course
presented on April 7.
Ladies, i f anyone is interested
in this course, please
contact Doris at 886- 4108.
Our roll call for March
was " What is your impression
of genetically modified
organisms?" There was a
lively discussion on the
pros and cons of these
foods. The conclusion was
that everyone should make
the effort to learn more
about GMOs so that they
can make an informed deci-
Marion Brown is
involved with the Safety
City being constructed near
30th Avenue and
55th Street in Red Deer.
There is to be a farm safety
component in this mini city.
This will consist of a hip
roof barn style building in
which all aspects of operating
a farm safely will be
taught. We sincerely hope
that this will be a benefit to
both the urban and rural
population.
There was a discussion
on the Trans Canada Trails
and the implications on our
rural property owners.
There has to be extensive
discussion between government,
landowner and the
perceived public access to
these trails regarding the
public usage of it and liabilities
that may be incurred
by the landowner. At present,
it seems the landowner
is being held responsible
for the construction, maintenance,
policing and liabilities
of these trails through
their properties.
The successful Garden
Club will be repeated this
year. For children, this is a
great way to learn about
gardening - planting, hoeing
and reaping the
rewards of flowers and produce.
Please contact Kathleen
Lawrence ( 886- 48151 il
you have any children whc
mav be interested in this.
The Pine Lake WI wil
again be canvassing foi
Cancer this year.
