Marilyn Wattenbarger, Olive Meyer, Fern Killeen AWI Council & Dignitaries PINE L A K E WI. A visit to the Ellis Bird Farm is a must for all Albertans and visitors. It is open to the public during the months of June, July and August. It is a nonprofit organization established in 1982 to carry on the work of pioneer conservationists, Charlie and Winnifred Ellis, of Lacombe, Alberta. It is a beautiful farm with natural wooded areas and majestic 60- year- old spruce trees. Pine Lake W. I. visited the Ellis Bird Farm on June 12. A morning meeting in the shelter of the sunny side of the lilacs was followed by exploring the several pathways through the wooded areas and observing the special orchards and flowers all chosen carefully for the birds and butterflies and other wildlife by Winnie and Charlie Ellis. The fence lines are all lined with the largest number of functional bluebird nest boxes in any one area. Winnie Ellis, sister of Charles Ellis, was also a visitor on June 12 and to see their work continuing must have given her great pleasure. Irma Lawrence presented a program on " The Seven Factors that Contribute to a Longer Life." The factors are: A stable marriage, moderate alcohol use, no smoking, exercise, appropriate weight, having a positive outlook and being free from depressive illness. Only the last is beyond the individual's control. Another factor that improves lifespan was having gained 16 years of education. You can choose your spouse, whether or not you'll smoke, your treatment of alcohol and your general outlook. That includes an outlook that values education. Kathleen Lawrence and Doris Warke groomed the W. I. Corner and set in dusty miller, and red, white and multi- colored petunias. The " Coffee Party" on June 6 provided a pleasant morning at the Hub Community Centre with 68 ladies attending. There was a nice display of Pine Lake W. I. handicraft, bake and plant tables and three draws during the morning. The first draw for the Adelaide Hoodless rose, donated by Parkland Nurseries, was won by Vera Jeffery of the Lacombe 4- Point W. I. Second place draw for the dried flower arrangement, donated by Beth Smith, was won by Blanche Cunningham of Cottonwood W. I. Third place draw for a potted patience, donated by M i l l i e Munro, was won by Ella Sawyer. The F. W. I. C. Volunteer of the Year w i l l be decided by the name chosen from one name drawn from each WI. branch. The Pine Lake WI. member drawn was Vera Pierce. The Farmers' Market has begun at the Pine Lake Store and Fas Gas on Fridays from 3 to 5 p. m. and ends August 31. Submitted by Isabelle Beck r v -
