P i n e L a k e W o m e n ' s Institute Submitted by E. Marion Brown Pine Lake Women's Institute members marked International Women's Day at their March 9th meeting. Marion Brown illustrated the meaning of this special day for the women of Nicaragua as she saw it first hand on her visit to that Central American country on March 8th, 1989. Supported by slides Ms. Brown showed the life of women in Nicaragua and their plea for greater privileges as they met with their president, Daniel Ortega, at that time. Ironically the guest speaker for the evening was Dwayne Hillman, a volunteer who had spent seven days on the eastern coast of Nicaragua in late January 2004 distributing Christmas boxes to children. Kathleen Lawrence, educational convener for Social Services introduced Mr. Hillman who joined twenty- two other participants in ponga boats delivering the precious boxes to nine villages. A survey is done by local churches to asses the needs and ages of children in each village. Mr. Hillman said they were able to give every child a box because of the generosity of Canadians. Over six and one half million were prepared in Canada with over 300,001) boxes coming out of the Calgary depot. The group u hich included a medical team were able to bring love, hope and encouragement to an under privileged country Although the February meeting was cancelled because been busy. Five ladies met on March fourth to assemble twenty- two " quilt pockets" readied by Dons Warke. These will be used at the FWIC 2006 Convention to carry name tags, meal tickets etc. The annual Heart Fund card party was held February 28 with seven tables enjoying whist. 5325.00 was donated to the heart fund. Prizes and lunch were donated by the Pine Lake Women's Institute. The public was also privileged to buy marmalade which had been made by Kathleen Lawrence. Sales amounted to $ 70.00 for the branch. Marion Brown reported thai all levels of history had been completed and submitted. Preparations were made for attendance at the District III Workshop in Bashaw, March 18/ 04 and the Kneehill Valley Constituency Conference, Apnl 3/ 04 at Trochu. A garden club will again be sponsored by the Pine Lake Women's Institute for the district children this summer.
