2S A L B E R T A , W O M E N ' S I N S T I T U T ES The papers too have not as yet murmured on the increase of copy Sometimes I wonder if we fully appreciate the amount of space given us by the newspapers of A l b e r t a In the past twelve years of our work, we have given to the reading public of this province what is equal in length to fifteen average sized books There is no organization that gets the publicity that we do and let us hope and prav that in these days of retrenchment the newspapers will not cease to finance this department of our work Let me explain. Financing the Department Three newspapers, the Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal and Lethbndge H e r a l d pay for every expense connected with our publicity, cuts from photographs ( and these are verv expensive), paper the larger part of the postage and a person to run it The reports do not appear regularly i n the daily issues of the Calgar> Herald and Edmonton Journal, but only as space permits They do in the weeklies, the Alberta Farmer and A l b e r t a F a rm j o u r n a l They also appear daily in the Lethbndge H e r a ld The} are apportioned as follows Mberta Farmer— Published every Thursday, takes news of the whole pro\ ince A l b e r t a F a rm Journal— Published every Wednesday news noith of Calgar> Lethbndge Herald— News appears e\ erv Saturday, covers countrj south t r om Caigar} In return for a total revenue of $ 47 50 per month the newspapers expect me to prepare news copy tor each week one and a half to three columns Thev expect this copy to be in on a set time, just as the copy from an) other member of their staffs The newspapers realize the commercial value of our news as subscription getters or they would not run it They, too, are receiving a bargain in the buying of it, for they get it at approximate!} half the price of their regular space rates The preparing of this copy is equal to w r i t i n g of two full length novels a v ear it it onl} appeared in one paper Of course it means hours of w o rk filing writing it in triplicate form and editing it It means, if one keeps in t o u i h with the work constantly, t i e attending of the District Conferences, Annual Convention and Council Meetings T r om the monthlv revenue of $ 47 50 I buy all the paper, envelopes, carbon paper stamps and provide the typewriter w i t h all its attendant expenses so i t s net remuneration at the most is about $ 40 00 per month In addition to the regular work I also furnish the odd article for the T a rm and Ranch Review the Canadian Press and to the W I papers of other provinces It entails a huge correspondence, an average of five letters each week Pictorial Viewpoint It I were to suggest a pubhcitv slogan foi the A l b e r t a Women's Institutes this } ear it would be Get the P i c t o r i a l V i e w p o i n t " \ s vou k n ow there is a terrific sameness about our news— it is as vou all say ' those monotonous reports which } OU read and I write Each vear I need material for 52 leaders tor our columns— so delegates take out } our note books and take this message back from } our P r o v i n c i a l Pubhcit} Secretary
