Miss Zelma Moves, Edmonton, favored the audience w i t h a pleasing piano
so'o, and was greeted with hearty applause.
The report of the Standing Committee of Canadianization and N a t i o n al
Events was ably presented by the convener, M r s . F. G. Grevett, Calgary, who
r e f e r r e d to the increasing interest shown in the department during the past
year. She urged greater use of play- lets and pageants and handicraft festivals,
and the adoption of the slogan, " A flag for every school." This report
appears on page 51.
" There has been a material change in the attitude of the Canadian people
t o w a r d Immigration." declared M r s . C. L y n c h - S t a u n t o n , Lundbreck. convener
of the standing committee on Immigration, i n g i v i n g her report. The change
was attributed to general financial depression and serious unemployment.
One of Canada's fundamental needs is population, and yet immigrants are
refused admission unless they have means to establish themselves. Report
in full on page 48.
M r s . Maurice Gossip, Calgary, convener of the standing committee on
H o u s e h o l d Economics, was granted a few minutes to bring greetings to the
convention, having a r r i v e d after her paper had been read.
M r s . T o m Gardner, accompanied by Mrs. James, gave two very pleasing
vocal selections.
No part of the four days' p r o g r am created a greater degree of interest
or held more closely the undivided attention of the delegates and visitors than
did the splendid address of Dr. H e l e n M a c M u r c h y . Chief of the D i v i s i o n of
C h i l d Welfare, Department of Pensions and National Health, Ottawa. We
are pleased to be able, through the courtesy of D r . M a c M u r c h y , to print the
f u l l text of her i n s p i r i n g address in this report, beginning on page 72.
A t 4.30 p. m. convention adjourned to the M e d i c a l Building, where J . W .
C a h i l l , of the Federal Livestock Branch, staged a demonstration in beef
grading, which proved to be one of the most interesting features of the
session. Three sides of beef, displaying the red ( choice) and the blue ( good)
a l o n g w i t h an unbranded side of medium beef were shown, and one side was
cut up during the demonstration. Numbers were placed on 20 cuts to test the
j u d g i n g a b i l i t y of the delegates. Mrs. T . R. B l a i n e , 10124- 106th St., Edmonton,
t u r n e d in a perfect score c a r d w i t h every cut properly named. T w o scores of
90 ( the high mark is usually 85, stated M r . C a h i l l ) were won b y M r s . J . S t o r m -
quist of C h e r h i l l , and M r s . G. A . W e b e r of Sedgewick. The demonstration was
arranged j o i n t l y by the federal and provincial departments of agriculture.
Thursday Evening, May 21st
T h u r s d a y evening was given over to the Edmonton Women's Institute,
who were most gracious hostesses to a delectable banquet served to over three
hundred delegates and visitors in Athabaska H a l l . A most tempting menu
was served the guests, who were seated around long tables a r t i s t i c a l ly
decorated with lighted candles and flowers. At the head table were seated
H i s Honor Lieutenant- Governor and Mrs. W a l s h , H o n . J . E . Brownlee and
M r s . Brownlee, H i s W o r s h i p Mayor Douglas, M r s . R. C. W a l l a c e , Dean and
M r s . W . A . R. K e r r , M r s . H . J . Montgomery, Mrs. A . H . Rogers, M r s . J . N .
Beaubier, M r s . W . H u y c k and M r s . F . A . Nye, who acted as toastmistress,
and others.
