Lectures and papers were given at many branch meetings on . different
phases of maternal welfare. One b r a n c h reports having given a $ 1.00 bank
account to each o f . e i g h t new babies.
Schools
M e d i c a l examinations were held in four schools. D r i n k i n g fountains and
paper towels were supplied in s e v e r a l . schools and in many places d r i n k i ng
water was analyzed. One branch reports having a committee that visits the
school each month and any unsanitary or unhealthy condition found is reported
to the school board. Several branches supply and maintain first aid
k i t s in the school. Hot l u n c h w a s . s e r v e d in several schools and in one urban
centre milk was supplied to undernourished children as well. One branch is
h e l p i n g to build a school kitchen. Prizes were given . at school fairs for
p h y s i c a l d r i l l and a $ 15.00 cup was given at R e i d H i l l fair as a health trophy;
t h i s . w a s won by T h i g h H i l l school.
Clinics i
I n one report which I received a mother of ten children has this to say:
" I should l i k e to commend the government on the . T r a v e l l i n g C l i n i c ; I think
this is the most forward step in public health that has been taken, as it
brings rthe service to many who otherwise could not, for financial reasons,
have their c h i l d r e n attended to. In the case of m y own family, we had three
c h i l d r e n operated on at a c l i n i c t w o years ago a n d i t h e cost of the three was
not much m o r e t h a n half the cost for one c h i l d undergoing the same treatment,
i n a hospital in 1922."
Twelve branches report having sponsored the T r a v e l l i n g Clinics during
the year and arrangements for four others had to be cancelled on account of
I n f a n t i l e P a r a l y s i s.
B a b y Clinics
F i f t y - t w o baby c l i n i c s were held and one branch adds, " The c l i n i c . g r o ws
bigger each year, 83 babies being examined this year." In many places lunch
was served . to the mothers and m i l k supplied to the children. The largest
number reported examined at a clinic was 112.
Other Clinics '
F o u r branches report h a v i n g dental clinics. In one school 46% of the
c h i l d r e n had defective teeth. Three report h a v i n g c h i l d r e n inoculated against
scarlet fever and three against diphtheria. Three pairs of glasses were given
t o children f o l l o w i n g examination at clinics.
Nursing Courses
T h i r t y branches report having n u r s i n g courses given by a nurse f r om the
Department and many branches report having had Dr. Owen's lecture, while
others . had illustrated lectures by M r . Cook. One reports having had the
i l l u s t r a t ed lecture, " M r . a n d M r s . M i c r o b e and a l l the l i t t l e M i c r o b e s , " a very
" a l i v e " picture I would think.
