OBITUARIES
ROBINSON - Ruth Robinson, a
resident of Heart Haven Lodge,
passed away at the Stettler Health
Centre on Aug. 21, 1997 at the age
of 91 years. In her early years with
her family, Ruth moved several
times before settling on the homestead
at Buenavista in 1921. She
got her early schooling around the
area and at Buenavista just a half
mile from home. For grades 10 and
11 she rode horseback into Donal-da
most days, seven miles one
way. The next year she attended
normal school in Camrose and received
her teaching certificate. As
a young lady in the Buenavista
area, she joined the " Green
Peaches Club" - all were unmarried,
hence the name - and only a few of
the members remain. Some of the
schools that she taught at included
Little Rock in the Meeting Creek
area, Rockling Bay at Pelican
Point, Rosebush at Edberg for
three years and La Glas at Grande
Prairie for one year. It took several
years before she got her S300 salary
for the year. Out of this money
she paid rent for the teacherage
and food. She also had additional
duties as janitor and nurse. . It was
about this time she got her first car,
It was unheard of for a woman in
1938 or 39 to own her own car, and
drive it. Using the new freedom,
she took the opportunity to drive to
the States with her mother, a major
undertaking for anyone at this time
in Alberta's history. She cooked for
a time in a cafe in Meeting Creek,
then in a cafe in Bashaw with Vera
O'Berg for three years. She taught
grade one in Camrose, then moved
to Round Hill and taught for three
years during the war. It was here
that she met and married Cecil on
Dec. 23, 1945. In 1949 they bought
the farm north of Erskine and
moved down, bringing both her parents
to live with them. Ruth taught
for several years in Stettler. Her
first classroom was in the old Pen-
