Quilting - Page 2 For several years the women made two " W. I." quilts each winter, one pieced and the other appliqued. Designs have included pansy, tulip ( 2), rose, maple leaf ( 2). As an indication of the rise in prices, our first maple leaf quilt made in 1974 sold for $ 50.00, while the second one sold in 1978 for $ 150.00. We exhibit our quilts at the W. I. annual convention and at Red Deer, Bentley and Rimbey as well as at our Constituency Handicraft tea. The prize money often covers the cost of materials - and there is much satisfaction and pride in seeing a red ribbon on our work. We have filled many orders for quilting. As a rule, these are completed tops, with lining and filling supplied by the customers. During the last three years, we have completed six quilts for the Red Cross Society, which supplies all materials. These are sold at their Annual auctions in Calgary and Edmonton. Those made by our .. stitute have sold for from $ 60 to $ 190. For Mrs. G. Holmes we made over two dozen quilts. Two of these were hand appliqued in a large " daisy" pattef?" cut out many years ago. We did the applique and the quilting and finishing. The rest of her quilts were made of small pieces put together by hand and blocks sewn together and quilted and finished by the W. I. Mrs. Holmes was sewing her last quilt when she suffered a massive stroke and never recovered. We finished tha+- quilt also. Mrs. Holmes was well over ninety at this time. Perhaps more important than the money we've earned through our quilt projects is the fellowship and good times we enjoy at our " Quiltings" not to mention the skills we have developed.
