Home and Country Fall 2007
7
W ith fall upon us with the beauty of the colors and harvest being finished
it is also time to look ahead to Women’s Institute matters.
Last year AWI Council reviewed our finances very carefully and decided
that we must hold a fundraiser to help with the cost of our Provincial Convention.
The cash raffle was a huge success. We came much closer to meeting all of our
financial commitments for the Convention, without taking all of the money to meet
the deficit out of our savings, which is how we have paid for the Convention in
the past. The practice of taking money from our savings does pay the bills but
it also reduces our income from interest we receive from the savings accounts.
When our interest income is lower it creates a larger problem the following year
due to a smaller income.
Council has decided to hold a cash raffle this year to help raise some of
the funds needed for the 2008 Convention. I will be printing and distributing the
tickets. We will draw for two prizes, the first prize will be $ 500.00 and the
second will be $ 250.00. The tickets will sell for $ 2 each and can be sold to any
adult person who resides in the province of Alberta. Due to the laws governing
raffles in Alberta we cannot sell raffle tickets to residents outside the province or
to any person under the age of 18 years. The tickets will be mailed out to each
branch based on membership ratio so the job will be equal for all members. We
will be printing a very limited number of tickets so I would suggest that you
purchase your tickets or sell them to other people who might be interested in
joining our organization. If a lady who is not a member wins, it just might pique
her interest and get her to join!
I hope to get the tickets out to the membership by early November so
you can use them for stocking stuffers for Christmas. Please keep in mind only
give them to adults if you choose to use them as stocking stuffers. Thank you
for your continued support. wi
W ell I can tell you personally
I know very little about
this province. The most
I know about it is that the 2009
Federated Women’s Institutes of
Canada Convention will be held
in Charlottown, Prince Edward
Island.
This triennium Alberta
Women’s Institutes members have
been twinned with Prince Edward
Island members so this would be a
great opportunity to learn about not
only the operations of the PEIWI but
to learn about the province. I will
be collecting names to match with
those from Prince Edward Island, so
please send me your name and a short
paragraph about yourself so I can
match you up with someone who has
similar interests. I think it is wonderful
to be twinned with the province hosting
the next Federated Women’s Institutes
of Canada Convention. If you are
remotely planning to go to the next
Federated Convention this would be
a wonderful way to learn about the
province and possibly even get to meet
your pen pal.
This is also a great way
to promote the events going on in
Alberta Women’s Institutes as well as
tell someone from far away about this
fabulous province. It would be great to
meet someone from another province
in Women’s Institutes and it is always
good to learn something new and make
new friends.
I look forward to finding
many names and requests in my mail
box. wi

What do you know about
Prince Edward Island?
Brenda Willsie, District 5 Director
T he ACWW Conference was great.
The information on what the many
families world over really need sure is
a concern.
What can we do to help? There
are so many barriers for us to do anything.
ACWW committees research all concerns and
find ways we can help. Canada has asked to
help orphanages and we will soon tell you if
our ideas were accepted at the ACWW Board
Meeting.
Remember our cash donations go directly to the project and
with all our volunteer hours there is no middle office.
Members if you were lucky enough to travel to some other area for a
holiday this year please share your pictures and experiences as many of our sisters
cannot travel. wi
