Colchester Celebrates 50 Years
Isabelle Nash, Colchester WI Member
O n September 17th, 2007 the Colchester WI celebrated their 50th
Anniversary with a dinner at an Edmonton Restaurant. Two guests
celebrated with us. Charter members Agnes Christie, Violet Fenske,
Blanche Martin, Evelyn Kadatz and Helen Gahr recalled events of earlier years.
Irene Moir gave a summary of the achievements of the group. Fifty year pins
were presented to the Charter members, poems were read and memories enjoyed.
This was followed by cutting of the cake. A minute of silence was observed for
all departed members and a memoriam for Amelia Lang departed charter member
was held.
A presentation followed by Mae Deans, Former AWI Executive Director
and Colchestrer WI member and Dr Evelyn Ellerman, Associate Professor,
Communications Studies, Athabasca University on their work in preserving the
history of the Alberta Women’s Institutes. Colchester Branch has agreed to be the
liaison between the Provincial Archives and the AWI in this enormously valuable

Lloyd Kenney spoke on the
topic of ‘ Identity Theft’. His slide
presentation was very informative. The
crime of identity theft is increasing in
Canada. Carolyn Stieda of the CIBC
Branch in Lacombe joined Lloyd in his
presentation on credit card and bank
fraud.
Vital information such as
name, address, date of birth, social
insurance number and mother’s maiden
name are acquired in order to complete
the impersonation.
Tips for prevention include;
aNever keep your social
insurance number on your person
aAvoid keeping a written
record of PIN numbers
aDo not keep passwords on
your person or in your handbag
aImmediately report lost or
stolen credit cards
aImmediately report any
discrepancies in your statements to the
issuing company
aIf your statement does not
arrive, phone the bank or credit card
company
aSign the back of your credit
card
aNever lend your card to
anyone
When making a transaction
at the bank, take away your receipt,
money, and your bank card. If you feel
rushed, leave the bank and come back
later. Do not accept help from anyone
as they may have tampered with the
machine and want your PIN number
to finish the transaction.

Power rates are going up
and many people are changing to
wind power. Don and Mary Leighton
are setting up a wind system. Mary
explained the technical side of the
system. Many government agencies
are involved and have to be dealt with
before going on to the next stage.
Excess power can be sold on the grid.
Thanks go to Olive Meyer,
Beryl Ballhorn and Fern Killeen
of Angus Ridge WI who held the
memorial service. Those honoured
were Kathleen Carson, Darlene Hilker,
Irene Fox, Agnes Forrest Middleton,
Mary Moschenross, Dorothy ‘ Jean’
Hahn, Jennie Pauline Lundell, and
Joyce Kruger.
I would like to thank Greg and
Delores Lingley for the sound system
and entertainment, Diane Hartman for
doing the audit of the books, Brenda
Willsie for doing the minutes and
Shirley Greene for looking after the
registration.
Thank you for coming out
and supporting the workshop. wi .
