Home and Country Fall 2007 Colchester Celebrates 50 Years Isabelle Nash, Colchester WI Member O n September 17th, 2007 the Colchester WI celebrated their 50th Anniversary with a dinner at an Edmonton Restaurant. Two guests celebrated with us. Charter members Agnes Christie, Violet Fenske, Blanche Martin, Evelyn Kadatz and Helen Gahr recalled events of earlier years. Irene Moir gave a summary of the achievements of the group. Fifty year pins were presented to the Charter members, poems were read and memories enjoyed. This was followed by cutting of the cake. A minute of silence was observed for all departed members and a memoriam for Amelia Lang departed charter member was held. A presentation followed by Mae Deans, Former AWI Executive Director and Colchestrer WI member and Dr Evelyn Ellerman, Associate Professor, Communications Studies, Athabasca University on their work in preserving the history of the Alberta Women’s Institutes. Colchester Branch has agreed to be the liaison between the Provincial Archives and the AWI in this enormously valuable project. Kitty Parlby spoke about ‘ Autism in Children’. Seven years ago Kitty and Rick’s son was diagnosed with this condition. Kitty has studied the many aspects of autism. She has attended conferences and workshops and her knowledge has been increased by many visits to specialists in the field and from interaction with parents of other autistic children. Au t i sm i s a c omp l e x developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. It is the result of a neurological brain dysfunction. Autism and its associated behaviours are estimated to occur in 1 in 166 children. His slide presentation was very informative. The crime of identity theft is increasing in Canada. Carolyn Stieda of the CIBC Branch in Lacombe joined Lloyd in his presentation on credit card and bank fraud. Vital information such as name, address, date of birth, social insurance number and mother’s maiden name are acquired in order to complete the impersonation. Tips for prevention include; aNever keep your social insurance number on your person aAvoid keeping a written record of PIN numbers aDo not keep passwords on your person or in your handbag aImmediately report lost or stolen credit cards aImmediately report any discrepancies in your statements to the issuing company aIf your statement does not arrive, phone the bank or credit card company aSign the back of your credit card aNever lend your card to anyone When making a transaction at the bank, take away your receipt, money, and your bank card. If you feel rushed, leave the bank and come back later. Do not accept help from anyone as they may have tampered with the machine and want your PIN number to finish the transaction. Lloyd Kenney can be reached at 780- 460- 9449 Power rates are going up and many people are changing to wind power. Don and Mary Leighton are setting up a wind system. Mary explained the technical side of the system. Many government agencies are involved and have to be dealt with before going on to the next stage. Excess power can be sold on the grid. Thanks go to Olive Meyer, Beryl Ballhorn and Fern Killeen of Angus Ridge WI who held the memorial service. Those honoured were Kathleen Carson, Darlene Hilker, Irene Fox, Agnes Forrest Middleton, Mary Moschenross, Dorothy ‘ Jean’ Hahn, Jennie Pauline Lundell, and Joyce Kruger. I would like to thank Greg and Delores Lingley for the sound system and entertainment, Diane Hartman for doing the audit of the books, Brenda Willsie for doing the minutes and Shirley Greene for looking after the registration.
